E.R. Have you have always written only M/M romance? or did you get there after trying other genres? and if yes, why you have chosen this specific genre at the end? Where did you get the idea?

L.B. My first novel was a mainstream politcal thriller called "Flight of the Sparrows". But it took a long time to get published. "A Bit of Rough" was my second book. It sold immediately and I've been writing M/M ever since because it is so popular. I wrote slash fanfcition before that. It was M/M.

Hai sempre scritto solo M/M ? o ci sei arrivata dopo altri generi ? e se sì, perché hai scelto questo genere specifico ? come ti è venuta l'idea ?

Il mio primo romanzo era un thriller politico intitolato "Flight of the Sparrows". Ma c'è voluto parecchio tempo per vederlo pubblicato. "A Bit of Rough" è stato il mio secondo libro. L.B. They way I write it, it is definitely romance. I like loving committed couples.

L.B. They don't care as long as I'm happy and satisfied with my writing. They are very supportive of my work.

L.B. M/M has been around on the Internet for over 35 years and women have been reading it even longer than that. Women love men!

E.R. How do you image your "typical" reader, and what do you think he/she is looking for in your novels?

L.B. Both gay men and straight women read my work if my fan mail is anything to go by. I think they are both looking for a combination of hot sex and loving romance. I try to give it to them.

A giudicare dalle email della mia fanlist, i miei libri vengono letti sia dai gay che da donne etero. Penso che i lettori siano alla ricerca di una combinazione di sesso "bollente" e di romanzo d'amore. Io cerco di offrire loro entrambi.

E.R. Why do you think a M/M novels can be interesting for a woman? Why a female reader of "classic" romance should have to give them a try?

L.B. Women love men. We love the power nad srtrength of men. We love the way they look, act and feel. We love their dominant personalities and their loving, tenderness. With M/M we get that doubled! Plus when both partners are male there is a certain amount of raw energy and powerful mystic rolled into the relationship. They don't have to be so gentle and careful as with a women. It's a turn on.

Perché ritieni che i romanzi M/M possano essere interessanti per una donna ? cioè, perché una lettrice di romance "classici" dovrebbe provarli ?

Le donne amano gli uomini. Amiamo il potere e la forza degli uomini. Amiamo il modo in cui ci guardano, agiscono e sentono. Amiamo la loro personalità dominante e la loro tenerezza affettuosa. Nei romanzi M/M troviamo tutto questo moltiplicato per due! Inoltre, quando entrambi i partner sono uomini, nella relazione entra una buona quantità di energia selvaggia, di potenza quasi mistica. Tra di loro non devono essere gentili e attenti come farebbero con una donna. E' una cosa molto eccitante.

E.R. In an interesting essay (The Androgynous Reader: Point of View in the Romance ) romance writer Laura Kinsale says that a female romance reader unconsciously identifies herself with the hero's rather than with the heroine's point of view. In a novel with two heroes, which do you think could be her attitude?

L.B. She can be either person and still be the one in control or the one with the strength before both men are still men. One is not a helpless clinging personality. At least not in western M/M romance.

Può identificarsi con entrambi, sia con il personaggio dominante che con quello di maggior forza - sono entrambi uomini. Non c'è una personalità debole, bisognosa di sostegno. Almeno, non nei romanzi M/M occidentali (riferimento al fatto che nei romanzi yaoi (romanzi M/M orientali derivati dai manga giapponesi) c'è sempre una personalità forte, maschio alfa, ed una personalità debole, maschio beta od addirittura omega).

E.R. What do you think of the classic alpha vs. beta males classification ? Is it applicable to M/M romances, i. e. one of the 2 main characters must be an alpha, the other one a beta?

L.B. A lot of it is, mine is, but it doesn't have to be. M/M gives you a chance to have the best of both worlds because it can be alpha/beta pairings or alpha/alpha to a lesser degree. I like alpha/beta myself.

Cosa ne pensi della classica suddivisione maschi alfa / maschi beta ? è applicabile all'M/M, cioè uno dei 2 protagonisti dev'essere un alfa, l'altro un beta ?

Molti romanzi M/M seguono questo modello, anche i miei, ma non deve essere per forza così. I romanzi M/M ci danno la possibilità di avere il meglio da entrambi i mondi, dato che ci può essere una coppia alfa/beta o alfa/un po' meno alfa. Personalmente preferisco le coppie alfa/beta.

E.R. The "coming out" is still a dramatic and very intense moment in your novels and in many other M/M stories. Why? Shouldn't it be something less weird, more "common" by now ?

L.B. It's a dramatic element that many stories use as a key plot point. I don't focus on gay issues so much as that they are just a part of my characters everyday lives. I write to entertain not push home a point.

Il momento del " coming out " è tuttora un momento drammatico e molto intenso dei tuoi romanzi e per molti M/M. Perché ? non dovrebbe essere invece ormai qualcosa di meno strano, di più "normale" ?

E' un elemento drammatico che molte storie usano come elemento chiave della trama. Non mi focalizzo sui problemi dei gay, se non per il ruolo che giocano nella vita quotidiana dei miei personaggi. Scrivo per divertimento, non per dimostrare qualcosa.

E.R. Do you think to go on writing only M/M novels or are you planning to try other genres as well? Your programs for the future?

L.B. More M/M novels! I have several more planned for the year and more sequels to "A Bit of Rough", too. I love Bram and Jamie and will write about their lives together for a long time. As long as readers want to read about them.

Poco prima di morire il capo indiano Lupo Grigio chiede al nipote Shanaco di condurre la sua tribù nella riserva di Fort Still.

Shanaco è un mezzosangue,figlio di un indiano e di una donna bianca,e dopo la morte dei genitori ha scelto di vivere alla maniera dei bianchi;per questo la sua gente non si fida di lui, nonostante la stima per le sue qualità di guerriero.Del resto anche i bianchi lo disprezzano in quanto mezzosangue e lo considerano solo un ignorante selvaggio, capace solo di massacrare la gente.

Al Forte si trova anche Maggie, una giovane maestra che insegna inglese ai ragazzi indiani, da cui il giovane capo indiano è subito attratto:Maggie infatti non ha paura degli indiani e tantomeno di lui, al contrario della maggior parte delle donne e nonostante la sua temibile fama. Anche Maggie è attratta dal suo fascino, ma non è l’unica:anche un’altra donna al forte è interessata a lui.

E’ Lois Harkins, la vanesia figlia di uno dei comandanti che tenta più volte di sedurlo senza alcun successo.Davanti alla sua indifferenza e dopo l’ennesimo rifiuto, Lois giura vendetta e accusa Shanaco di stupro.Così il giovane capo indiano viene sbattuto in cella senza alcuna prova e nessuno che lo difenda;tranne Maggie, che a costo di violare le regole, lo aiuterà a fuggire e a dimostrare la sua innocenza, mentre tra i due nasce un amore più forte di qualsiasi pregiudizio.

Questo romanzo di Nan Ryan è uno di quelli che io ritengo un’” attrazione oltre ogni logica”.Infatti lo stile dell’autrice è pieno di buchi: la narrazione per fortuna scorre senza problemi, ma l’autrice ha il vizietto per me molto brutto di concentrarsi molto più del necessario sull’aspetto fisico dei protagonisti, soprattutto di Shanaco, ovviamente bellissimo.Per gran parte del romanzo ci viene ricordato, anche nei momenti più drammatici e meno opportuni, quanto il suo torace sia possente, le sue spalle larghe, i suoi muscoli così lucenti e forti….a un certo punto viene voglia di dirle:”siiii, non occorre che me lo ripeti 3000 volte…l’ho capito!!!”.Insomma più che eccitare ( perché penso che sia quello lo scopo ultimo di questa assurda scelta) alla fine stufa, tanto più che lo stesso capita con la protagonista;infatti non manca occasione in cui non ci venga ricordato quanto i suoi capelli siano lucenti e soffici e la sua pelle morbida e bianca…

Oltre a ciò, abbiamo spesso alcune situazioni assurde( tipo una gara a cui il protagonista partecipa sapendo di vincere perché gli altri non sono capaci!!!E però all’ultimo momento si tira indietro per far vincere qualcun altro!!!)e anche i dialoghi non sono sempre al massimo ( andate a leggere cosa la “seduttrice” di ce al protagonista a pag. 165…si muore dal ridere!);inoltre la cattiva Lois alla fine è talmente perfida da essere solo una macchietta, mentre se l’autrice non fosse stata così impegnata coi fisici dei due protagonisti avrebbe potuto venirne fuori ben altro personaggio.

Eppure…eppure non l’ho dato via e anzi a tutt’oggi lo ricordo come uno dei romance che mi è piaciuto di più. E questo grazie ai due protagonisti, che quando non vengono mostrati solo come corpi catturano la mia attenzione:lui, Shanaco, un mezzosangue da tutti( comprese le donne che vanno con lui) ritenuto un feroce selvaggio assetato di sangue, quando invece è semplicemente un uomo solo che ha bisogno di dare e ricevere amore; lei, Maggie, una ragazza coraggiosa e senza pregiudizi che da subito prende in simpatia Shanaco vedendolo finalmente come uomo, come gli altri.Il loro idilio nella casetta di lei e la loro dolce storia valgono da soli la pena di leggere il romanzo, pur con tutte le sue imperfezioni.

Attenzione però, lasciate perdere le banalità, ad esempio, parole straniere scritte con errori ortografici etc: cerchiamo i VERI errori, insomma l’equivalente di un centurione romano con lo Swatch al polso, chiaro ? Qui non si scherza, ragazze: si sbaglia sul serio !

A BRILLIANT LINGUIST INDEED !

In “The Highlander” by Elaine Coffman, set in the Scottish Highlands, 1740, the French heroine Sophie d’Alembert says that her father was a brilliant scholar and linguist, since “… he knew more than a dozen of languages, many of them ancient ones – Egyptian, Aramaic, Coptic, Etruscan…” ( page 427 of the US edition ).

Monsieur d’Alembert must have been a VERY brilliant linguist indeed, since:

- Etruscan language has NOT been deciphered yet! It’s still one of the most sought-after goals and fascinating mysteries for linguists, together with deciphering linear A, and as of today only very few elements of the language's vocabulary and basic grammar have been revealed;

- the Rosetta stone, the trilingual inscription in Egyptian hieroglyphics/Greek/Demotic which was key for deciphering Egyptian, was unearthed only many years later, and precisely in July 1799 by Napoleon's army in Rosetta (Rashid), Egypt. Jean-Francois Champollion finally found the way to translating the Rosetta Stone in 1822, and published it in “Lettre à M. Dacier”.

What a pity monsieur d’Alembert didn’t share with anybody his findings! Imagine how much work could have been spared to poor Champollion…

UN LINGUISTA DAVVERO BRILLANTE !

Nel romanzo di Elaine Coffman “The Highlander” ( tradotto in Italia nella collana GRS Harlequin come “La dama del mistero”), ambientato nelle Highlands scozzesi nel 1740, l’eroina francese Sophie d’Alembert afferma che suo padre era uno studioso ed un linguista brillante, visto che “… conosceva oltre una dozzina di lingue, tra cui molte lingue antiche – l’egiziano, l’aramaico, il copto, l’etrusco…” ( pagina 427 dell’edizione americana ).

Monsieur d’Alembert era senz’altro un linguista MOLTO brillante, poichè:

- l’etrusco NON è stato ancora decifrato! A tutt’oggi sono stati ricostruiti solo pochissimi vocaboli e qualche elemento della grammatica base, ed la sua decifrazione, insieme a quella della lineare A, è uno dei misteri più affascinanti e degli obiettivi più ambiziosi dei linguisti;

- la stele di Rosetta, l’iscrizione trilingue in geroglifici egiziani / greco / demotico che fu la chiave per la decifrazione dell’egiziano, fu scoperta solo parecchi anni più tardi rispetto agli avvenimenti del romanzo, e precisamente nel luglio del 1799 dall’esercito di Napoleone a Rosetta (Rashid), in Egitto. Jean-Francois Champollion trovò il modo per decifrare la stele di Rosetta nel 1822, pubblicandolo nella “Lettre à M. Dacier”.

Peccato che monsieur d’Alembert non abbia reso note le sue scoperte al mondo intero! Immaginate quanto lavoro si sarebbe potuto risparmiare il povero Champollion…

In ultimo, ecco qui la perfetta opportunità per Meg di indossare il suo cappello da investigatore per seguire le tracce dei problemi di quello straniero scostante! Tuttavia, l'uomo le fa provare dei brividi così piacevoli attraverso il corpo. E sebbene il paradiso potrebbe attenderla nelle braccia di Gareth, potrebbe risiederci anche il pericolo... se la determinata lady si imbarca in una missione per vincere il suo amore.
