Interview with Laura

E.R. Have you have always written only M/M romance? or did you get there after trying other genres? and if yes, why you have chosen this specific genre at the end? Where did you get the idea?

L.B. My first novel was a mainstream politcal thriller called "Flight of the Sparrows". But it took a long time to get published. "A Bit of Rough" was my second book. It sold immediately and I've been writing M/M ever since because it is so popular. I wrote slash fanfcition before that. It was M/M.

Hai sempre scritto solo M/M ? o ci sei arrivata dopo altri generi ? e se sì, perché hai scelto questo genere specifico ? come ti è venuta l'idea ?

Il mio primo romanzo era un thriller politico intitolato "Flight of the Sparrows". Ma c'è voluto parecchio tempo per vederlo pubblicato. "A Bit of Rough" è stato il mio secondo libro. L'ho venduto immediatamente e da allora ho continuato a scrivere romanzi M/M , dato che sono così popolari. Ho anche scritto romanzi slash (genere di libri che si ispirano a personaggi dei telefilm/film e che ipotizzano evoluzioni del personaggio oltre il ruolo) che erano anch'essi M/M.

E.R. Do you consider the M/M genre part of the romance genre or rather an highly erotic "mainstream"?

L.B. They way I write it, it is definitely romance. I like loving committed couples.

Consideri gli M/M parte del genere romance o piuttosto un "mainstream" altamente erotico?

Nel modo in cui li scrivo io, si tratta assolutamente di romance. Mi piacciono le coppie che si amano, e dove i partners si sentono reciprocamente impegnati.

E.R. What does your family think of the fact you're writing M/M romances? how did they react?

L.B. They don't care as long as I'm happy and satisfied with my writing. They are very supportive of my work.

Cosa pensa la tua famiglia del fatto che tu scrivi questo tipo di libri ? come hanno reagito ?

Non se ne preoccupano, fintanto che sono felice e soddisfatta di quello che scrivo. Mi appoggiano molto nel lavoro che faccio.

E.R. What do you think will be the future of M/M romance? is it only a temporary fashion, or something more?

L.B. M/M has been around on the Internet for over 35 years and women have been reading it even longer than that. Women love men!

Quale pensi sia il futuro dei romanzi M/M ? è solo una moda del momento, o qualcosa di diverso?

I romanzi M/M circolano su internet da oltre 35 anni e le donne li leggevano anche prima. Le donne amano gli uomini!

E.R. How do you image your "typical" reader, and what do you think he/she is looking for in your novels?

L.B. Both gay men and straight women read my work if my fan mail is anything to go by. I think they are both looking for a combination of hot sex and loving romance. I try to give it to them.

Come immagini che sia il tuo lettore "tipico", e cosa pensi che cerchi dai tuoi romanzi ?

A giudicare dalle email della mia fanlist, i miei libri vengono letti sia dai gay che da donne etero. Penso che i lettori siano alla ricerca di una combinazione di sesso "bollente" e di romanzo d'amore. Io cerco di offrire loro entrambi.

E.R. Why do you think a M/M novels can be interesting for a woman? Why a female reader of "classic" romance should have to give them a try?

L.B. Women love men. We love the power nad srtrength of men. We love the way they look, act and feel. We love their dominant personalities and their loving, tenderness. With M/M we get that doubled! Plus when both partners are male there is a certain amount of raw energy and powerful mystic rolled into the relationship. They don't have to be so gentle and careful as with a women. It's a turn on.

Perché ritieni che i romanzi M/M possano essere interessanti per una donna ? cioè, perché una lettrice di romance "classici" dovrebbe provarli ?

Le donne amano gli uomini. Amiamo il potere e la forza degli uomini. Amiamo il modo in cui ci guardano, agiscono e sentono. Amiamo la loro personalità dominante e la loro tenerezza affettuosa. Nei romanzi M/M troviamo tutto questo moltiplicato per due! Inoltre, quando entrambi i partner sono uomini, nella relazione entra una buona quantità di energia selvaggia, di potenza quasi mistica. Tra di loro non devono essere gentili e attenti come farebbero con una donna. E' una cosa molto eccitante.

E.R. In an interesting essay (The Androgynous Reader: Point of View in the Romance ) romance writer Laura Kinsale says that a female romance reader unconsciously identifies herself with the hero's rather than with the heroine's point of view. In a novel with two heroes, which do you think could be her attitude?

L.B. She can be either person and still be the one in control or the one with the strength before both men are still men. One is not a helpless clinging personality. At least not in western M/M romance.

In un romanzo con 2 eroi, quale pensi che possa essere l'atteggiamento della donna che lo leggerà ?

Può identificarsi con entrambi, sia con il personaggio dominante che con quello di maggior forza - sono entrambi uomini. Non c'è una personalità debole, bisognosa di sostegno. Almeno, non nei romanzi M/M occidentali (riferimento al fatto che nei romanzi yaoi (romanzi M/M orientali derivati dai manga giapponesi) c'è sempre una personalità forte, maschio alfa, ed una personalità debole, maschio beta od addirittura omega).

E.R. What do you think of the classic alpha vs. beta males classification ? Is it applicable to M/M romances, i. e. one of the 2 main characters must be an alpha, the other one a beta?

L.B. A lot of it is, mine is, but it doesn't have to be. M/M gives you a chance to have the best of both worlds because it can be alpha/beta pairings or alpha/alpha to a lesser degree. I like alpha/beta myself.

Cosa ne pensi della classica suddivisione maschi alfa / maschi beta ? è applicabile all'M/M, cioè uno dei 2 protagonisti dev'essere un alfa, l'altro un beta ?

Molti romanzi M/M seguono questo modello, anche i miei, ma non deve essere per forza così. I romanzi M/M ci danno la possibilità di avere il meglio da entrambi i mondi, dato che ci può essere una coppia alfa/beta o alfa/un po' meno alfa. Personalmente preferisco le coppie alfa/beta.

E.R. The "coming out" is still a dramatic and very intense moment in your novels and in many other M/M stories. Why? Shouldn't it be something less weird, more "common" by now ?

L.B. It's a dramatic element that many stories use as a key plot point. I don't focus on gay issues so much as that they are just a part of my characters everyday lives. I write to entertain not push home a point.

Il momento del " coming out " è tuttora un momento drammatico e molto intenso dei tuoi romanzi e per molti M/M. Perché ? non dovrebbe essere invece ormai qualcosa di meno strano, di più "normale" ?

E' un elemento drammatico che molte storie usano come elemento chiave della trama. Non mi focalizzo sui problemi dei gay, se non per il ruolo che giocano nella vita quotidiana dei miei personaggi. Scrivo per divertimento, non per dimostrare qualcosa.

E.R. Do you think to go on writing only M/M novels or are you planning to try other genres as well? Your programs for the future?

L.B. More M/M novels! I have several more planned for the year and more sequels to "A Bit of Rough", too. I love Bram and Jamie and will write about their lives together for a long time. As long as readers want to read about them.
