It’s the fourth novel of the Bedegrayne – Claeg’s saga, which as of today includes:

1) “A Lady’s Mischief” (the story of Rayne Wyman + Devona Bedegrayne) – translated in Italy as “Una dama temeraria”in the series “I Romanzi” by Mondadori

2) “A Gentleman At Heart” (the story of Keanan Milroy + Wynne Bedegrayne, Brook’s best friend) –translated in Italy as “Il cuore di un gentiluomo”in the series “I Romanzi” by Mondadori

3) “Tempting The Heiress” (the story of Brock Bedegrayne + Amara Claeg, Mallory’s sister)

4) “Courting The Countess” (the story of Mallory Claeg + Brook Meylan)

The four novels are strongly connected, and I recommend to read them all following the original sequence to better enjoy them.

Since her cruel husband Lyon’s death, Brook Meylan, Countess of A’Court, lives in an isolated Cornish cottage, disgusted by the ton’s gossips about her dreadful marriage. She strongly opposes to all her family’s attempts to have her back in London’s society life, and spends her days glooming and walking alone along the beach.

When Mallory Claegg, the unconventional painter (and notorius rake) who lives next door, sees Brook, his predatory instincts awaken at once: widows are just his favorite kind of mistresses, always available, experienced and risk-free, easy to take and equally easy to leave. With no hesitation he approches Brook, and offers to paint her a portrait: Brook’s sittings will be the perfect pretext for meeting her alone, and start his patient, relentless seduction.

In spite of all her doubts and uncertainties, Brook finds herself irresistibly attracted by the daring, charming painter and not only throw herself into a torrid affair with him, but even starts to entrust Mallory with all her most intimate and painful secrets: her husband’s betrayal, the loss of her baby… And very soon it will be Mallory’s turn, in spite of his apparently detached attitude, to disclose to Brook the darkest, most dramatic sides of his own past – so that slowly, against all expectations, they will be bonded to each other by a much stronger and powerful link than lust.

The novel’s plot is centered around the “classic” theme of the rake discovering love and eventually reforming thanks to it, but the author refreshes it by creating a very sensual, dark and even sometimes harsh atmosphere, in sharp contrast with respect to most historicals settled in Regency England whose soppiness often makes my teeth ache. The final result is valuable, interesting and engaging, even if sometimes Mallory’s dark side and Brooke’s tormented past overwhelm the emotional and sentimental side of the story.

I quattro romanzi sono strettamente collegati, ed è consigliabile leggerli in sequenza per apprezzarli meglio.

Fin dalla morte del crudele marito Lyon, Brook Meylan, la contessa di A’Court, vive isolata in un cottage in Cornovaglia, disgustata dalle chiacchiere del ton sul suo disastroso matrimonio. Continua ad opporsi con decisione a tutti i tentativi dei suoi famigliari per riportarla a Londra e farle riprendere la vita di società; e passa le sue giornate camminando da sola, malinconicamente, in riva al mare.

Quando la vede Mallory Claeg, lo spregiudicato pittore (e famigerato donnaiolo) che ha preso alloggio nel cottage vicino al suo, il suo istinto di cacciatore si risveglia immediatamente: le vedove sono esattamente il tipo di amante che Mallory predilige, disponibili, esperte e senza rischi, facili da prendere ed altrettanto da lasciare. Avvicina quindi Brook senza esitare, e si offre di farle un ritratto: le sedute di posa saranno il pretesto perfetto per incontrarla da sola, ed iniziare così la sua paziente e inesorabile opera di seduzione.

Brook, malgrado tutti i dubbi e le insicurezze, è irresistibilmente attratta dall’audacia e dall’irriverenza dell’affascinante pittore, e non solo inizia rapidamente con lui una torrida relazione, ma si scopre a confidargli i suoi segreti più intimi e dolorosi: i tradimenti del marito, la morte del bimbo che aspettava… E Mallory, che apparentemente l’ascolta con distacco, inizia a sua volta a rivelarle i lati più oscuri e drammatici del proprio passato. E pian piano, questo farà sì che tra loro nasca, imprevedibilmente, un legame ben più forte e duraturo dell’attrazione fisica.

Il tema di questo romanzo è quello classico del libertino che scopre finalmente l’amore e cambia vita, ma la Pierce lo rende decisamente più originale creando un’atmosfera molto sensuale, cupa e torbida, a volte addirittura aspra, in netta controtendenza rispetto a quasi tutti i romanzi ambientati nel periodo regency che troppo spesso peccano di eccessiva zuccherosità.

Il tentativo è apprezzabile, ed il risultato interessante ed avvincente, anche se forse in alcuni punti il lato “dark” dell’eroe, Mallory, ed il drammatico passato di Brook prendono il sopravvento sulla parte più emozionale e sentimentale della storia.
