Psychologist Willow Zane has a background full of pain. Using her knowledge, she has written a successful self-help book, and is now turning the mission into a retreat for those needing healing. When she meets Brandt, she recognizes he needs help -- but he doesn't want to accept it. Willow also has to escape her past and allow herself to heal. Wonderful, complex characters are slowly developed so the reader clearly understands them and shares their emotions. The mystery is interesting but never so intrusive that it takes away from the strong relationship growing between Willow and Brandt. (Page Traynor)

Gericke's first act is fresh, and his prologue kicks the story off with a taut, grisly slice of terror; in these you can see the potential for a first-rate cops-and-psychos novelist. Questa volta però la trasgressione si spinge un po' troppo in là, e la mattina del secondo giorno si ritrovano a seppellire il cadavere di un semi-sconosciuto, decidendo di non parlare mai più dell'episodio. Un mese più tardi, però, alcuni lavori stradali portano alla luce il corpo, avvolto nella costosa coperta di Ann, con tanto di etichetta della lavanderia. Un weekend di svago, qualche gesto avventato di troppo, e rischiano di essere incriminate per omicidio. E la verità è ben lontana dall'aiutarle.

Erastes: ANCHE GLI UOMINI HANNO BISOGNO DI ROMANCE

When I first had the idea to write a gay historical romance I decided to do a bit of research to find out whether there was such a thing as gay romance (yes, but not much) and whether people would:

1. publish it
2. buy it
3. read it
4. like it

I wasn't sure of the answers, even though I did as much research as I could do.

I was told so many things and they all turned out to be wrong.

- That only women wrote it (wrong)
- That only women read it (wrong)
- That gay men wouldn't read a gay romance book by a woman writer. (wrong)
- That I'd never sell it, (wrong)
- That there had been an attempt in the 1980's ("Gaywyck" by Vincent Virga) to kick-start such a genre (true)
- but it had fizzled out (wrong)

I had a gut feeling that that gay men would read gay romance as opposed to - or in addition to, gay porn. I read both - why not them? I knew that a lot of women liked it, I'd discovered that from my years in fanfiction but even there male writers were rare.

When I looked on the net I found one site "Romentics" established by two gay men, Scott and Scott, who were so disillusioned by the paucity of gay romance in the gay fiction world that they decided to start up their own publishing house, and it's doing pretty well, too, by the looks of it. I got in touch with them and they said that it was difficult to get the stuff accepted by the publishers. (www.romentics.com)

So when, after Standish  was published, I started to receive emails from male readers, who were more than happy to have some romance in their novel, I punched the air, I felt so bloody amazing.

I replied to them, and I voiced my concerns. I couldn't say "are you gay?" because it seemed rude, although it also seemed rude for me to assume it, too, but I said that I was glad they'd like it, and that I was worried that men wouldn't read it.

"Are you KIDDING?" They said, whole heartedly, "why wouldn't we read it?" One man, a member of a large internet book club said that he knew at least 10 other men who were reading it and reading it slowly because they didn't want it to end.

I can understand this, not for any big headed reasons about my book, but merely for the point that the gay historical romance is a rare beastie.

I got talking to my creative writing class tutor - his son was gay, and he often bewailed the fact to his father that there were no gay romance books, no Mills & Boons, no Harlequins, no books where he could put up and read - knowing that gay men like him could find love and end up happy ever after.

Gay "romance" seems to be separated into distinct categories.

1. Porn (the one handed goodness from publishers like Starbooks)
2. e-books (Lots of it there, with an emphasis on fantasy)
3. High Literature (At Swim Two Boys, The Charioteer, Maurice, Wicked Angels etc)

Thank goodness for them all, say I.

.... But... There's nothing much to compare with "Love's Savage Splendour" or "His Faithful Heart" or whatever. No "formula" (and yes I hate that word too, even though I write romance) romances. There are, however a very few writers writing it, but so few of us that each book is snapped up and read voraciously by an eager audience of women who like gay romance, and gay men themselves. Then they wait (im)patiently for the next one to come out. They are active, they share books and recs, they post on Amazon to share their new finds. They are passionate, and there's not enough of it to satisfy their voracious appetites.

To me, that proves there's a market for it.

All I need to do now is convince the publishing world!!!

Quando all'inizio mi venne l'idea di scrivere un romance storico omosessuale decisi di fare un po' di ricerca per scoprire se qualcosa come gay-romance esistesse già (sì, ma non molto) e se potesse essere:

1. pubblicato
2. acquistato
3. letto
4. e se potesse piacere

non ero sicura delle risposte, anche se feci tutte le ricerche possibili.

Mi dissero moltissime cose, e tutte risultarono essere sbagliate.

- Che solo le donne scrivono romance (sbagliato)
- Che solo le donne leggono romance (sbagliato)
- Che gli uomini omosessuali non avrebbero letto un gay-romance scritto da una donna (sbagliato)
- Che non lo avrei mai venduto (sbagliato)
- Che ci fu un tentativo negli anni 1980 (Gaywyck by Vincent Virga) che diede il via a questo genere (vero)
- ma che aveva fallito (sbagliato)

Mi sentivo che gli uomini omosessuali *avrebbero* letto un gay romance come contrapposizione - o completamento ai romanzi porno gay. Ho letto entrambi - perchè no? e mi sono accorta che a molte donne piacciono, l'ho scoperto fin dai miei anni di Fanfiction, ma anche là gli autori maschi erano rari.

Nel cercare sulla rete trovai un sito "Romentics" creato da due omosessuali, Scott e Scott, che erano delusi per l'insufficienza di gay romance nel mondo della fiction omosessuale e che avevano deciso di fondare la loro personale casa editrici, e sta andando pure piuttosto bene, da quello che sembra. Mi misi in contatto con loro e mi dissero che era molto difficile far accettare i manoscritti dagli editori. (www.romentics.com)

Così, quando iniziai a ricevere emails da lettori uomini, che erano più che felici di avere qualche romance tra i loro romanzi, ho esultato, mi sentivo eccezionalmente sbalordita.

Risposi loro, e diedi voce alle mie preoccupazioni. Non potevo chiedere "siete gay?" perchè mi sembrava rude, e da parte mia sembrava rude anche supporlo, ma dissi che ero contenta del fatto che sarebbe loro piaciuto, e che ero preoccupata che gli uomini non l'avrebbero letto.

"Stai SCHERZANDO? " mi dissero di cuore "Perchè non dovremmo leggerlo?" Un uomo, membro di un grande club del libro su internet disse che conosceva come minimo 10 altri uomini che lo stavano leggendo, e leggendo lentamente perchè non volevano finirlo.

Posso capirlo, non per la presunzione di aver scritto il libro, ma semplicemente per il fatto che i romance storici per omosessuali sono bestie rare.

Parlai al mio insegnane di scrittura creativa - suo figlio era omosessuale, e spesso si lamentava con suo padre del fatto che non esistevano gay romance, nessun Mills&Boons, nessun Harlequins, nessun libro che potesse leggere - sapendo che uomini come lui potevano trovare l'amore e da quel momento essere felici.

"Romance" gay sembrano separati in distinte categorie

1. Porno (il tipo pubblicato da editori come Starbooks)
2. e-books (molti di essi, con una accentuazione del fantasy)
3. alta letteratura (At Swim Two Boys, The Charioteer, Maurice, Wicked Angels etc)

Grazie a Dio per tutti quanti, dico io.

...ma... non esiste nulla di simile a "Love's Savage Splendour" o "His faithful heart" e cose simili. Nessuna "formula per romance" (e si, odio anche quella parola, anche se scrivo romance). Ci sono tuttavia alcuni scrittori che li scrivono, ma così pochi che ogni libro è accalappiato e letto voracemente da un pubblico desideroso di donne cui piacciono i gay romances, e anche di uomini omosessuali. E poi aspettano impazientemente che esca il prossimo. Sono attivi, si scambiano libri e recensioni, postano su amazon per condividere le loro scoperte. Sono appassionati, e non c'è abbastanza da leggere perchè soddisfino il loro appetito.

Questo, per me vuol dire che esiste un mercato per il gay romance.

Tutto quello che devo fare ora è convincere il mondo dell'editoria!!!
