Dear Emma, it’s a pleasure for us to have you as a guest once again, on the occasion of the Italian release of Kissing Midnight (Il profumo dell’oscurità). It’s the first book in the Fitz Clare trilogy, part of the Midnight series, would you introduce the series to our audience?

Thanks! I’m very happy to be here. I fell in love with the Fitz Clare family patriarch way back when he appeared as the hero’s brother in Catching Midnight, the first of my vampire books. Edmund kept popping up in other books, especially Courting Midnight, but it took me a while to figure out what sort of story and what sort of love interest I wanted to give to him. In the end, I’d been thinking about him so long he had to get three books!
The vampires I write about (aka, the upyr) are shapechangers. In general, the longer they live the more powerful they get, but only a few are born with the potential to be masters. Some are good in nature and some are evil. Most are a mix of both. Edmund Fitz Clare is a master vampire who’s been around since the Middle Ages, and he’s committed his share of sins. He carries a lot of guilt from his early years, which he tries to redeem by adopting a trio of children who were orphaned in the First World War. Sally, Ben and Graham are grown up by the time Kissing Midnight begins, and about to discover their kindly, eccentric professor father has been hiding quite a big secret.

Cara Emma, è un piacere ospitarti nuovamente in occasione dell’uscita italiana di IL PROFUMO DELL’OSCURITA’. Questo è il primo volume della bella trilogia FitzClare, parte della serie Midnight, ti andrebbe di presentare la saga al nostro pubblico?

Grazie! Sono felicissima di essere vostra ospite. Mi innamorai del patriarca della famiglia Fizt Clare quando apparve come fratello del protagonista di Catching Midnight, il primo dei miei libri sui vampiri. Edmund continuò ad apparire in altri romanzi, specialmente in Courting Midnight, ma mi ci è voluto un po’ per capire che tipo di storia e che tipo di interesse sentimentale avrei dovuto dargli. Alla fine, ho pensato a lui talmente a lungo che gli ho dedicato tre libri!
I vampiri di cui scrivo, ovvero gli Upyr, sono mutaforma. In generale, più a lungo vivono, più forti diventano, ma solo alcuni nascono con il potenziale per divenire dei master. Alcuni sono buoni, altri malvagi. La maggioranza sono un mix delle due cose. Edmund Fizt Clare è un vampiro master che è in giro dal Medioevo e ha commesso la sua parte di peccati. Si porta dentro un grande senso di colpa per i suoi anni giovanili e tenta di redimersi adottando tre ragazzi rimasti orfani durante la Grande Guerra. Sally, Ben e Graham sono cresciuti quando inizia Il profumo dell’oscurità e stanno per scoprire che il loro gentilmente eccentrico padre professore ha nascosto loro un grande segreto.

In our previous interview, you declared that you like it best when you can write paranormal. Would you explain us why and how did you decide to create the Midnight series?

I’d been wanting to write vampire stories forever, it seemed to me, but there was a time when authors couldn’t sell paranormal romance to publishers. Editors didn’t believe readers would buy it. When Christine Feehan started hitting big with her “Dark” series, that changed. I jumped on the chance to pitch Catching Midnight to my editor and, happily, she accepted the idea.

Nella nostra precedente intervista, dichiarasti che ti sentivi al tuo meglio quando potevi scrivere una storia con elementi paranormali. Puoi spiegarcene la ragione e dirci come decidesti di creare la serie Midnight?

Mi sembra di aver sempre desiderato scrivere storie di vampiri, ma c’è stato un periodo in cui uno scrittore non poteva vendere romance paranormali agli editori. Gli editor non credevano che le lettrici li avrebbero comprati. Quando Christine Feehan iniziò ad ottenere un grande successo con la serie dei Carpaziani, le cose cambiarono. Mi sono buttata e ho colto l’occasione di presentare Catching Midnight alla mia editor, che fortunatamente accettò l’idea.

The Midnight series is pretty long, and most of its books can be read as stands alone, so why did you decide to write this closely related trilogy? Your idea or your Publisher’s?

That was definitely my idea. I had a hankering to tell an ensemble story, where I could follow the adventures of a close-knit family as a whole, without substantially separating the characters for each book. I really enjoyed exploring their relationships over time: how each of the characters grew, how they discovered their bravery and their capacity to love.

La serie Midnight è piuttosto lunga e buona parte dei suoi libri possono essere letti autonomamente, dunque come mai hai voluto scrivere una trilogia strettamente collegata al suo interno? Fu una tua idea o della casa editrice?

E’ stata assolutamente una mia idea. Avevo una gran voglia di raccontare una storia di insieme, dove potessi seguire le avventure di una famiglia molto unita come un unicum, anziché separare i personaggi per ogni libro. Mi è davvero piaciuto esplorare i loro rapporti nel corso degli anni: come tutti i personaggi sono cresciuti, come hanno scoperto il loro coraggio e la loro capacità di amare.

Edmund Fitz Clare is a very fascinating character: strong and fragile at the same time, brave and generous. How was it born? Where did you take inspiration from?

Sibling relationships fascinate me. Edmund was born as a rather flawed figure, a foil to his more heroic, more popular younger brother, Aimery. I think every human being knows what jealousy is, and most are also familiar with the mix of guilt and anger that jealousy can stir. Edmund’s emotions, while not admirable, were very relatable. They made me want to delve into his character further.

Edmund Fizt Clare è un personaggio molto affascinante: forte e fragile al tempo stesso, coraggioso e generoso. Ci puoi raccontare come è nato e da dove hai preso l’ispirazione?

I rapporti fra parenti e familiari mi affascinano. Edmund nacque come una figura decisamente piena di difetti, il cui compito era di far risaltare quella più eroica e popolare del fratello minore Aimery. Penso che ogni essere umano conosca la gelosia e la maggior parte di noi conosce anche quel miscuglio di senso di colpa e rabbia che essa può generare. Le emozioni di Edmund, per quanto non ammirevoli, erano molto comprensibili. Mi fecero venir voglia di approfondire ulteriormente il suo personaggio.

Estelle, Edmund love’s interest in Kissing Midnight, is so much younger than him in every way, being both human and a girl, not a mature woman. Why did you choose her as the heroine, instead of woman of, let’s say, thirty or forty years old? An older protagonist cannot be appealing or sexy like a girl?

Well, I’d argue that Nim Wei is the sexiest character in the whole Midnight series, and she’s older than everybody! *g* Also, Estelle has a mature nature. I think some women are just born with a maternal streak.

Estelle, l’innamorata di Edmund ne Il profumo dell’oscurità, è molto più giovane di lui in ogni senso, sia perché è una ragazza e non una donna matura, sia perché è umana. Come mai hai scelto lei come eroina, anziché una donna, di che so, trenta o quarant’anni? Forse una protagonista più grande non può essere attraente o sexy quanto una ragazza?

Be’, non sono d’accordo, infatti il personaggio più sexy dell’intera serie Midnight è Nim Wei e lei è più vecchia di tutti quanti! E poi Estelle è matura di natura. Penso semplicemente che alcune donne nascano con un istinto materno.

Which are your favorite passages of the whole series and for what reason?

Emotionally, I love Edmund and Graham’s big confrontation scene in Kissing Midnight. I really felt Graham’s conflict as I was writing it. He loves his stepfather, and yet his stepfather is a monster. Family loyalty says he shouldn’t betray him, while human decency says maybe he ought to be destroyed. I think that scene also demonstrates the fundamental goodness of Edmund’s heart, which neither Edmund nor Graham is ready to believe in yet.

Quali sono i tuoi passaggi preferiti di tutta la serie e per quale ragione?

Dal punto di vista emotivo, amo la scena del grande confronto tra Edmund e Graham ne Il profumo dell’oscurità. Ho davvero sentito il conflitto dentro Graham mentre lo scrivevo. Lui ama il patrigno eppure il patrigno è un mostro. La lealtà familiare gli dice che non dovrebbe tradirlo, ma la decenza umana replica che invece dovrebbe essere distrutto. Ritengo la scena dimostri anche la fondamentale bontà d’animo di Edmund, alla quale né Edmund né Graham sono ancora pronti a credere.

Your paranormal books are always filled with passion and steamy scenes, being your erotic touch a veritable trademark of yours. Do you still think of yourself an erotica author, having now taken another direction? And how would you like to be considered?

I see myself as a combination, and have seen myself that way from the beginning. Whether people think of me as a writer of romantic erotica or erotic romance doesn’t matter so much to me. I just hope they’re entertained by my stories.

I tuoi romanzi paranormali sono sempre intrisi di passione e pieni di scene bollenti, visto che il tocco erotico è proprio il tuo marchio di fabbrica. Pensi ancora a te stessa come a una scrittrice erotica, dopo aver preso un’altra direzione? E come ti piacerebbe essere considerata?

Mi vedo come una combinazione, e mi sono vista così fin da principio. Che la gente mi ritenga una scrittrice di romanzi erotici romantici, o di romance erotici per me non fa differenza. Mi auguro solo che le mie storie intrattengano.

How come that you began your career writing from Black Lace? Why not considering more traditional and secure genres?

I’ve always written what I wanted to read: very sexy, very emotional, slightly quirky stories. I think that’s been a good choice for me. After more than twenty novels, I still get excited to write the next.

Come mai iniziasti la tua carriera per la collana Black Lace? Perché non considerare dei generi più sicuri e tradizionali?

Ho sempre scritto ciò che volevo leggere: storie molto sexy, molto emozionanti e un pizzico non convenzionali. Penso sia stata una buona scelta per me. Dopo più di venti romanzi, sono sempre eccitata quando inizio la stesura di un nuovo libro.

Which are in your opinion, the differences between male and female erotica?

Just which gender tends to like one sort of story or another better. I expect the definition differs for each individual reader. If you know what you like to read, I don’t think it matters whether people who are the same gender as you like to read the same thing. Do Italians have a phrase for vive la difference?

Quali sono, a tuo giudizio, le differenze fra un erotico scritto da un uomo e quello scritto da una donna?

Semplicemente ciascun sesso tende a preferire un tipo di storia anziché un altro. Mi aspetto che la definizione differisca per ciascun lettore o lettrice. Se tu sai cosa ti piace leggere, non credo importi che la maggioranza di quelli del tuo sesso apprezzi il tuo stesso genere o meno. Voi italiani avete una frase per: Vive la difference?

Why do you think burning novels are taking over the market? Has the audience changed tastes or simply became less hypocritical?

I don’t know that they’re taking over the market. I suspect there will always be an audience for less torrid fare. I am glad to see hot novels getting a healthy share of the readership. This may be happening because there are so many different sorts of hot novels to choose from. Readers have a better chance of finding stories they enjoy. And they have a better chance of noticing their friends are reading hot stories. The more they realize the people who read erotica or erotic romance are ordinary, likable folks, the more likely they are to lose their shyness about trying them.

Secondo te, come mai i romance con una forte componente erotica stanno sempre più conquistando il mercato? Pensi che i gusti del pubblico siano cambiati o semplicemente ci sia meno ipocrisia?

Non so se stanno conquistando il mercato. Sospetto che ci saranno sempre lettrici che preferiscono storie meno torride. Sono felice che i romanzi hot si stiano prendendo una bella fetta di pubblico. Forse sta accadendo perché ci sono così tanti tipi di libri tra cui scegliere. Le lettrici hanno maggiori possibilità di trovare storie che le appassionino. E hanno maggiori possibilità di notate che le loro amiche leggono romanzi hot. Tanto più si renderanno conto che coloro che leggono libri erotici, o romance erotici, sono delle persone normali e piacevoli, quanto più perderanno la loro timidezza e li proveranno loro stesse.

Last but not least, could tell us what are you working on right now?

I recently finished a new “demon world” novel, which is called The Assassins’ Lover. It’s very exotic, very adventurous. In fact, it may be too “burning” for Italian publishers. I guess that’s one of the perks of living in America. We’re expected to be a little more depraved. *g*

E per finire, ci piacerebbe sapere su cosa stai lavorando adesso.

Ho appena terminato il nuovo romanzo della serie Demon World (in Italia è uscito qualche mese fa il primo volume, Il demone della passione) dal titolo The Assassins’ Lover. E’ molto esotico e molto avventuroso. In effetti, forse è troppo bollente per gli editori italiani. Immagino questo sia uno dei vantaggi di vivere in America. Ci si aspetta che siamo un po’ più depravati!
