James Dean in Rebel Without a Cause. James Dean in East of Eden. Okay, James Dean in just about every one of his movies epitomizes the bad boy. The kind of man that every mother warns her daughter to avoid which just makes them all the more attractive to the average girl.

Bad boys have been the focus of many a romance novel and lately, there's one more thing that mothers may tell their daughters to heed -- that the bad boy down the road may come with a dangerous bite.

The bad boys of today don't just sport black leather jackets that caress every inch of their broad shoulders or tight T-shirts defining every taut muscle of their impressive chests. They don't just tempt us with jeans whose swiss cheese holes give us tempting peaks of what lies beneath.

Today the bad boys also growl, snarl and flash a hint of tooth whether they be vampires, demons or an Amazonian were-jaguar.

Today's paranormal heroes are uber-bad. They're destined to make even the strongest of females doubt her resolve and the novels featuring such heroes are some of the hottest selling books in the marketplace.

So what is it about these bad boys with bite that has readers snatching the books off the shelves and devouring much like they either (a) want to be devoured or (b) would like to do the devouring?

First and foremost, there is the appeal of the otherwordly and the escape it offers from the confines of our everyday lives. It allows us to explore new worlds and the different rules of those worlds.

Second, no matter the culture in which you grew up, the battle of good versus evil, demon versus hero, is one with which you are likely familiar. That universal message transcends all cultures and genres. We like to see the good guys win and even more importantly, we are eager to see that even the worst bad boy can be redeemed. That they can become heroes. In fact, we become even more invested in heroes with flaws because it is that much more heroic for them to overcome their evil nature and become the good guy with bite.

Third, we love to be scared. Whether it's a roller coaster ride or a horror movie or dressing up on Halloween night, many humans seek the thrill that fear creates. They savor the rush of adrenaline that comes with a good fright and when that scary moment is followed by the rise of passion, the joy of having endured makes celebrating such survival even sweeter.

Finally, there is the rush that comes from the power of the demon and his taming. It's like the thrill of driving a super-charged Lamborghini. You know of the power beneath the hood and the damage it can cause when not used properly, but behind the wheel, you are the master of that power. You are in control.

In paranormal romances, the bad boys with bite are the ones with power. They are the danger that needs to be controlled and so you now must ask yourself, "Who is the one behind the wheel of all that power?"

The heroine, of course. The heroine is the one who risks death by her relationship with Fang Boy. She is the one who will experience the thrill as those sharp teeth brush her naked skin. She savors the passion that follows the fear, but more than anything, the heroine will be the one who will tame the beast. Who will take the power of the demon in her hands and control it.

It is that thrill of fear, that dominion over something more powerful, that makes bad boys with bite so appealing. It is why readers love the books that bring that roller coaster ride of emotions -- fear, passion, control, release -- as the story unfolds and our tortured bad boy relinquishes his power to love and is redeemed.

What about bad girls with bite? Is it the same for male readers? I've recently had the opportunity to hear from several male readers about some of my empowered heroines, including Stacia, a vampire elder who embodies the ultimate bad girl with bite. It's no surprise that the reaction has been similar. Men like to see women of power who are not perfect and who need to either embrace the goodness within them or keep on walking along the edge of the darkness. Male readers enjoy the thrill of fear and yes, even the passion that ensues.

Are bad boys and girls with bite here to stay? There are those who say the paranormal market is becoming saturated and yet, readers keep on coming back for more. However, sustaining a thriving paranormal genre will require that writers push the boundaries of the kinds of demons they write about and develop new and interesting mythologies.

Gli eroi paranormali di oggi sono ultra-cattivi. Sono destinati a far dubitare anche la più forte delle donne e i romanzi che hanno come protagonisti questi eroi sono tra i più venduti nel mercato dell'editoria.

Così che cosa hanno questi cattivi ragazzi che mordono per fare in modo che le lettrici afferrino i libri dagli scaffali e li divorino proprio come loro (a) desidererebbero essere divorate o (b) amerebbero essere loro a divorare?

Prima e sopratutto, c'è il fascino del mondo soprannaturale e la fuga che offre dai confini della vita quotidiana. Ci permette di esplorare nuovi mondi e le differenti regoli di questi mondi.

Secondo, non importa in che cultura tu sia cresciuta, la battaglia del bene contro il male, del demone contro l'eroe, è una cosa che ti è familiare. Quel messaggio universale trascende le culture e i generi. Ci piace vedere i bravi ragazzi vincere e ancora più importante, desideriamo vedere che anche il peggiore dei cattivi ragazzi può essere redento. Che possono diventare eroi. Infatti, siamo ancora più coinvolte con gli eroi che hanno dei difetti perchè è ancora più eroico da parte loro superare la loro natura malvagia e diventare il bravo ragazzo che morde.

Terzo, amiamo essere spaventate. Che sia una montagna russa o un film dell'orrore o vestirci per la notte di Halloween, molti umani cercano l'eccitazione che crea la paura. Assaporano la scossa di adrenalina che arriva con un bello spavento e quando il momento spaventoso è seguito dal sorgere della passione, la gioia di averlo sopportato rende il festeggiare questa sopravvivenza ancora più dolce.

Infine, c'è la scossa che arriva con il potere del demone e del suo ammansimento. E' come l'eccitazione di guidare una Lamborghini ultra modificata. Conoscete il potere al di sotto del cofano e il danno che può causare quando non viene usato nel modo giusto, ma dietro il volante, siete il padrone di quel potere. Ne avete il controllo.

Nei romanzi d'amore paranormali, i cattivi ragazzi che mordono sono quelli con il potere. Sono il pericolo che deve essere controllato e così voi sapete che dovete chiedervi, "Chi è quello dietro il volante di tutto quel potere?"

L'eroina, naturalmente. L'eroina è quella che rischia la morte a causa della sua relazione con il Ragazzo con i Canini. Lei è quella che sperimenterà l'eccitazione di quei denti affilati che sfiorano la sua pelle nuda. Lei assaporerà la passione che viene dopo la paura, ma più di utto, l'eroina sarà quella che addomesticherà la bestia. Che prenderà il potere del demone nelle sue mani e lo controllerà.

E' questo eccitamento che viene dalla paura, questo dominio sopra qualcosa di molto potente, che rende i cattivi ragazzi che mordono così afascinanti. Questo è il motivo per cui le lettrici amano i libri che fanno sperimentare le emozioni di una corsa sulle montagne russe - paura, passione, controllo, soddisfazione - mentre la storia si dipana e il nostro cattivo ragazzo tormentato rilascia il suo potere per amare ed essere redento.

E che dire delle cattive ragazze che mordono? E' lo stesso per i lettori uomini? Ho di recente avuto la possibilità di ascoltare diversi lettori uomini e le loro opinioni sulle mie eroine con super poteri, inclusa Stacia, una anziana vampira che impersonifica la cattiva ragazza che morde. Non è una novità che la reazione è simile. Gli uomini amano vedere donne di potere che non sono perfette e che hanno bisogno o di abbracciare la divinità che è in loro o di continuare a camminare al limite delle tenebre. I lettori uomini amano l'eccitamento della paura e si, anche la passione che ne deriva.

I cattivi ragazzi e le cattive ragazze che mordono sono destinati a sopravvivere? Ci sono alcuni che dicono che il mercato del paranormale è saturo e tuttavia, le lettrici continuano a chiedere ancora. Tuttavia, sostenere un genere paranormale fiorente richiederà che le scrittrici oltrepassino i limiti sul genere di demoni di cui scrivono e sviluppino nuove e interessanti mitologie.
