Grace McDaniel è una donna pratica e scettica, e non cerca l’amore. Nipote di un medico Cherokee, lavora come sceriffo di Lake Bluff, in Georgia, ed è già abbastanza indaffarata a seguire i problemi quotidiani di questa piccola città. Mentre si sta scatenando uno spaventoso temporale, arriva Ian Walker, un misterioso straniero che cura la gente usando metodi che uniscono la medicina moderna alle cure tradizionali dei nativi americani. Anche se è molto cauta nei confronti delle idee di Ian, Grace non può resistere a quello che il suo tocco scatena dentro di lei.
Ma Ian nasconde un terrificante segreto. Soltanto lui conosce la verità circa la creatura che dà la caccia agli abitanti di Lake Bluff.
