"Kris Kringle, that jolly little fellow with his eight tiny reindeer and sleighful of toys, must have had some Christmas trees tied on the back of his sleigh, for he would not have had the heart to leave them behind when he knew how much the girls and boys enjoy the sparkling, glittering trees all laden with holiday gifts."

"Sometimes the young people do not wait for Santa Claus to bring the tree, but hie away to the woods and secure one themselves days before Christmas, that they may have the sport of decorating it with their pretty home-made ornaments; and the girls and boys are wise, for it is always best, if possible, to cut one's own Christmas tree. They can bind the branches to the trunk to keep them from breaking, tie the tree on a sled or a hand wagon, and drag the fascinating burden home, as in olden times the people with merry laughter and song were wont to bring home the famous Yule log. In whatever way the tree is procured, make your own ornaments and decorate the tree with the aid of brothers and sisters or young friends."

"Most of the ideas given are for a daytime Christmas tree where lights are not used. If candles are employed, no paper festoons can be on the tree. But why use lights? They are always dangerous, and the tree can be so brilliant without them."

"A volte i piccoli non aspettano che sia Santa Claus a portar loro l'albero, ma vanno a prenderne uno direttamente nel bosco alcuni giorni prima di Natale, per avere il divertimento di decorarlo con graziosi ornamenti fatti in casa; e i bambini sono saggi, perché è sempre la cosa migliore tagliarsi il proprio albero di Natale. Possono legare i rami al tronco per evitare che si spezzino, legare l'albero a uno slittino e trascinare l'affascinante fardello a casa, così come nei tempi antichi la gente, ridendo e cantando, portava a casa il famoso Ceppo Natalizio. Qualunque sia il modo in cui vi procurate l'albero, realizzate i vostri ornamenti e decoratelo con l'aiuto di fratelli e sorelle o di giovani amici."

Chimney Sweep
"An ornament in which children delight, the idea which comes from Germany, is a jolly little black chimney sweep, with his funny broom held high in the air. He wears a peaked white hat and carries a bag filled with goodies. He is made entirely of prunes - one for the head, two for the body, one for each arm, one for each hand, two for each leg, and one for each foot. The prunes are strung together with a coarse needle and thread. If, when made, he is too limber, give him a backbone by running a slender, stick through the back of his head and body. Give him a paper hat shaped like a wide-mouthed horn, and make a paper face; then tie the sheer white bag across his shoulders, fasten it at the side with a pin and fill the bag with sweets; the broom can be fashioned of a wooden toothpick with a bunch of broom straws bound on one end. The happy child who receives him from the tree may devour the prunes when tired of the toy."

Spazzacamino
"Un ornamento che piace molto ai bambini, l'idea viene dalla Germania, è un piccolo allegro spazzacamino nero, con il suo buffo spazzolone tenuto alto. Indossa un alto cappello bianco e porta una borsa piena di bontà. E' fatto interamente di prugne secche - una per la testa, due per il corpo, una per ogni braccio, una per ogni mano, due per ogni gamba e una per ogni piede. Le prugne sono legate insieme con ago e filo. Se, una volta finito, è troppo mollo, dategli una spina dorsale infilando un bastoncino sottile attraverso la testa e il corpo. Dategli un cappello di carta a forma di grosso corno, e fate una faccia di carta; poi legate la borsa bianca di stoffa sulle spalle, assicuratela al fianco con uno spillo e riempitela di dolcetti; lo spazzolone può essere fatto con degli stuzzicadenti e un pugno di trucioli di legno legati a un capo. Il fortunato bambino che lo riceve dall'albero può divorare le prugne quando si stanca del giocattolo."


Raisin and Nut Garland
"Do not forget to have some form of jewelry for the tree, bracelets or necklaces - not of gleaming precious stones nor yet of gold or silver, but of toothsome nut kernels and delicious, dark rich raisins. With needle and strong thread string first a peanut, then a raisin, a peanut, a raisin, an almond, a raisin, a filbert, a raisin and so on, using as many kinds of nuts as you deem best. The boy or girl receiving the novelty will be charmed and later may devour the queer beads one by one as they are pulled from the string."

Ghirlande di Uva passa e frutta secca
"Non dimenticate di fare dei gioielli per l'albero, braccialetti o collane - non di brillanti pietre preziose né d'oro o d'argento, ma di gustosi gherigli di noce e deliziosa uva passa. Con un ago e un filo robusto infilate prima un'arachide, poi un'uvetta, un'arachide, un'uvetta, una mandorla, un'uvetta, una nocciola, un'uvetta e così via, usando tutti i tipi di frutta secca che volete. I bambini che ricevono questa novità saranno deliziati, e più tardi, possono mangiare le bizzarre perle una ad una sfilandole dal filo."

Orange Baskets
"Yellow is a color which stands out well in the midst of the dark-green foliage of the fir, and oranges are near enough the hue to be used with advantage. A few may be hung to the tree by means of ribbons; others can be made into pretty little baskets and filled with the candied sections of orange. Tie a piece of tape or any kind of band around an orange as a guide to cutting the rind evenly; stick tow pins on each side to designate the location then, with the small blade of a knife carefully cut the handle, keeping it the same width all the way from side to side. Next cut the rind along the edge of the tape. Remove the skin, in bits if necessary, to avoid any likelihood of tearing the handle or edge of the basket. Work the inside juicy fruit free from the remaining rind and take it out of the basket. If there is difficulty in doing this, cut the fruit out in pieces, that the basket may be saved from breaking. Pass a narrow ribbon around under the basket and up over the handle. Tie the ends, then bind them around under and over the middle of the handle, finishing with a bow-knot on top. The ribbon strengthens the handle, and without it the weight of the basket when hung on the tree would cause it to break from the handle and fall. Fill the orange basket with sections of the fruit, which have received a brittle coating by being dipped in clear, hot, home-made sugar candy."

Cestini di Arancia
"Il giallo è un colore che si stacca bene in mezzo al fogliame verde scuro del pino, e le arance sono abbastanza vicine a quella sfumatura da sposarsi bene. Alcune possono essere appese all'albero con dei nastri; altre possono essere trasformate in piccoli cestini riempiti con spicchi di arance canditi. Legate un pezzo di nastro o un altro tipo di fascia attorno all'arancia come una guida per tagliare i bordi perfetti; infilate degli spilli su ciascun lato per indicare il punto poi, con la piccola lama di un coltellino tagliate accuratamente il manico, facendo attenzione che sia della stessa larghezza da parte a parte. Poi tagliate la scorza lungo il bordo del nastro. Rimuovete la buccia, in pezzettini se necessario, per evitare che si rovini il manico o il bordo del cestino. Liberate il frutto sugoso all'interno dalla buccia rimasta e estraetelo dal cestino. Se trovate difficoltà a farlo tagliate il frutto in pezzetti, così il cestino non si romperà. Passate uno stretto nastro da sotto il cestino fino sul manico. Legate le estremità, poi legatelo attorno al centro del manico, finendo con un fiocco sulla cima. Il nastro rinforza il manico, senza di esso il peso del cestino, quando lo appenderete all'albero, può causare la rottura del manico e farlo cadere. Riempite il cestino d'arancia con spicchi del frutto, precedentemente immersi in un caldo caramello di zucchero fatto in casa."


Gilded English Walnuts
"There is one style of ornamental gift which must hang on the tree until New Year's Day - the gilded English walnut. The preparation of these can be made a delightful frolic if there are several young persons in the secret. Crack open the nuts so there will be two perfect half shells to each. Inside the empty nut place a motto or device which will tell the fortune, or part of it, of the recipient of the gift. Ideas will come to you as the work goes on. As a hint to help a little at the start, cut two hearts of red paper and fasten them together with a dart made of a pin and a piece of white paper. This denotes that the girl or boy who gets it will be the first to marry. A water-color brush, means that the happy lad or lassie to whose lot it falls will be an artist. A morsel of a music sheet signifies ability to appreciate music. A little bag ensures plenty of worldly goods. One suggestion gives rise to another, and you will easily think of more than enough for all the empty nutshells. After the "fortune" is placed within the nut, glue the halves firmly together. When dry work a tack in the end where the stem grew, twisting it slowly that the shell may not split or break. When the tack seems firmly in place, proceed to gild the entire nut, including the tack; tie a strong string on this and hang the "fortune" on the tree. As all the nuts look exactly alike, no one can tell which is which - not even those who made them will know who receives the different "fortunes" until the nuts are opened and the secrets revealed."

Noci Inglesi dorate
"Esiste un tipo di ornamenti da appendere all'albero fino al Nuovo Anno - le noci Inglesi dorate. La loro preparazione può essere trasformata in un delizioso divertimento se coinvolgono molti bambini. Aprite le noci in modo che i gusci siano perfettamente due metà. Dentro ogni guscio vuoto mettete una frase o un oggettino che predica la fortuna per chi lo riceverà. Le idee vi verranno man mano che il lavoro andrà avanti. Per darvi un piccolo aiuto all'inizio, tagliate due cuori di carta rossa e legateli assieme con una freccia fatta con uno spillo e una pezzo di carta bianca. Questo vorrà dire che la ragazzina o il ragazzino che lo riceveranno saranno i primi a sposarsi. Un pennellino da acquerello significherà che il bambino o la bambina cui andrà diventerà un artista. Un fogliettino con disegnate delle note musicali significheranno che imparerà facilmente la musica. Un sacchettino con scritto sopra Salute significherà un mondo di buone cose. Un suggerimento porterà a un altro, e presto vi risulterà facile pensare a idee sufficienti per tutti i gusci.
Dopo che il "presagio" è stato inserito nei gusci, incollate le due metà insieme. Quando è asciutto, infilate all'estremità della noce un chiodo, facendo attenzione di non spezzare il guscio. Quando sembra posizionato bene, procedete a dipingere d'oro la noce e il chiodo; legate un filo ad esso e appendete il "presagio" all'albero. Siccome tutte le noci saranno uguali, nessuno potrà dire cosa contengono - neppure quelli che le hanno preparate sapranno chi riceve i diversi "presagi" fino a che le noci non verranno aperte e i segreti rivelati."


Tinfoil Christmas Ornament
"One of the quickest made festoons for a Christmas tree, and one which has never been thought of until now, is decorations of tinfoil, the common kind of foil to be found at the florist's. It also comes around cakes of chocolate, rolls of cream cheese, large packages of tea and inside the paper around tobacco. You can make the trimming any length desired by pasting strips of the tinfoil together, but before joining the pieces fold one at a time and cut slashes on each side nearly across to the opposite side. Unfolded the strip resembles; pulled at each end it opens and lengthens out. This decoration catches the light and glistens beautifully, but it must be handled carefully and not laid down after it is stretched open. As soon as ready hang the strips on the tree, where they will be safe. The best plan is to make these loopings after the other decorations are finished and on the tree. When the pieces are cut they are more easily handled if but a few are put together at a time before they are pulled open; then the decoration will appear in perfect shape and look like polished, shining silver hanging in delicate, graceful festoons."

Ornamenti di Carta Stagnola
"Una delle decorazioni più rapide da fare per un albero di Natale, a cui nessuno ha ancora pensato fino adesso, è quella in carta stagnola, il comune foglio che si trova dai fioristi, e che si trova attorno ai dolci di cioccolata, nei larghi pacchi di te e dentro la carta attorno al tabacco. Potete fare i tagli di ogni lunghezza desiderata attaccando striscie di stagnola insieme, ma prima di unire i pezzi piegatene uno alla volta e tagliuzzatelo alternativamente su ogni lato quasi fino al lato opposto. Apritelo e tiratelo alle estremità. Questo tipo di decorazione cattura la luce e brilla magnificamente, ma deve essere maneggiato con cura enon steso finchè non è aperto completamente. Appena pronte appendete le striscie all'albero dove non rischieranno più di rompersi. La cosa migliore è fare questi festoni dopo che tutte le altre decorazioni sono già appese sull'albero. Quando i pezzi sono tagliati sono facili da maneggiare se ne mettete insieme pochi alla volta prima di aprirli; dopo di che la decorazione apparirà perfettamente formata e sembrerà d'argento."


Peanuts on String
"Peanuts wrapped in yellow, red, white, light-blue and pale-green fringed tissue paper and tied on pendent lengths of string, three or four to each, and attached at varying lengths to the limbs of the tree are a splendid decoration, for these peanut kisses give quite a gala appearance to the tree."

Collane di arachidi.
"Le arachidi avvolte in carta frangiata gialla, rossa, bianca, azzurra, verde chiaro e infilate in un filo a gruppi di tre o quattro, e poi attaccate a varie lunghezze ai rami dell'albero, sono delle splendide decorazioni, poichè questi baci d'arachidi danno un aspetto festoso all'albero."


Popcorn Balls
"Pop-corn balls look tempting on a Christmas tree. They are easy to make, a safe ornament when the tree is to be lighted with candles, and they taste very good, indeed. Have the fire clear and hot, with no flames, and put in the popper at one time only enough corn to cover the bottom a single kernel deep; shake the popper constantly while the corn is over the fire until it has all popped. Then boil one-quarter of a cupful of molasses with a little sugar until it hardens in the water, remove from the fire before it turns brittle and pour it over two quarts of corn. Mix well and make into balls about the size of lemons, suspend the sweet, white ornaments from the twigs, and use the remaining corn for a different decoration. String a lot of the flower-like kernels with a large needle and strong thread, loop the strands from branch to branch, and the snowy ropes will lighten up the foliage beautifully."

Palline di popcorns
"Le palline di popcorns hanno un aspetto invitante su un albero di Natale. Sono facili da fare, e un ornamento sicuro quando l'albero è illuminato dalle candele, e sono davvero molto buone. Mettete la pentola sul fuoco molto caldo, buttate il mais in una sola volta e a sufficienza da coprire il fondo della pentola. Agitate la pentola continuamente fino a che tutti i chicchi sono scoppiati. Poi portate ad ebollizione un quarto di una tazza di melassa con un po' di zucchero fino a che si indurisce nell'acqua, togliere dal fuoco prima che diventi fragile e dura e rovesciarla su due quarti del mais. Girate bene e fate delle palline della grandezza di limoni, appendete i dolci, bianchi ornamenti ai rametti, e usate il resto del popcorn per in'altra decorazione. Infilate i chicchi scoppiati con ago e filo, passateli di ramo in ramo, e il cordone bianco neve darà luce al fogliame."
 

** The Delineator (subtitled "A Journal of Fashion, Culture, and Fine Arts") was an American women's magazine that was published from 1873 until 1937. It was published by the Butterick Publishing Company. At the turn of the century, it had become the premier women's fashion magazine in the U.S. 

The Delineator (sottotitolato "Un giornale di Moda, Cultura e Arti") era una rivista femminile americana che venne pubblicata dal 1873 fino al 1937, dalla Butterick Publishing Company. Con il cambio di secolo, era diventato la prima rivista di moda per donne negli Stati Uniti.

MERRY CHRISTMAS !!

The first commercial Christmas cards were commissioned by Sir Henry Cole in London, 1843, and featured an illustration by John Callcott Horsley. The picture, of a family with  a small child drinking wine together, proved controversial, but the idea was shrewd:  Cole had helped introduce the Penny Post three years earlier. A batch of 1000 cards was printed and sold for a shilling each.

I primi biglietti d'Auguri di Buon Natale furono commissionati da Sir Henry Cole, a Londra, nel 1843, e illustrati da John Callcott Horsley. L'immagine, quella con un piccolo bambino che beve vino insieme alla famiglia, fu controversa, ma l'idea fu perspicace: Cole aiutò ad introdurre  la posta da un Penny tre anni più tardi. Una tiratura di 1000 cartoline fu stampata e venduta per uno scellino ciascuna.
