On the contrary female selkies, which are at least as alluring than the males to the eyes of earth-born people, are said to make excellent wives. If a man steals a female selkie's skin, she is in his power, to an extent, and she is forced to become his wife. As long as the skin remains hidden from her she will be a fine, if somewhat wistful, wife: since her true home is the sea, she will often be seen gazing longingly at the ocean.. But once she finds her seal-skin she will return to the sea leaving the husband to pine away for his lost 'love' forever.
