I still haven't had the chance to read any of Willa's works, but if added them to my wishlist after reading these great excerpts!!
*Thank you so much! :-D I'd recommend trying "Hell at One Dark Window", "Blood Red", and "Freedom Rising". The reason I don't suggest the longer novel "In the Strangest Places" is that it's in present-tense, which can be confusing even to those who have English as their first language. But if you'd like to try it, I'd be delighted!
I have some questions for Willa^_^
*I'll be glad to answer as best as I can.
What, do you think, has been the greatest factor in bolstering the popularity of M/M romances in the US? Brokeback Mountain? Emma Holly's MMF novels? Or maybe yaoi (Japanese MM Comics)? Or it's that MF romances are becoming 'boring'?
*I don't think M/F romances are becoming boring. There's still plenty of them and they still sell. At heart, I think that the popularity of M/M books comes from women who really enjoy seeing two men together. It's like that old joke about men watching two women together. It's what I love to read, so it's what I chose to write. Yaoi and Brokeback Mountain are probably big contributors to the genre, though.
And were you, as an author, surprised by the surge of this genre's popularity, or was it somehow 'expected'?
*I was so inexperienced when I first started out that I didn't know what to expect so far as popularity went. I was just writing what I liked, and I was thrilled to have my first manuscript accepted. It sold, the publisher picked me up for more books, and it's just gone from there. :-)
As to the reason why F/F romances don't sell, I have a theory. I think the success of M/M romances is due mostly to the female (etherosexual) readership. They would not be interested in reading a F/F romance because what they're - usually - looking for in a romance is a hero (or two of them^_-).
*I think you're very right in your hypothesis. Women still want to read about a strong man.
Finally, thank you for your time and dedication ^_^
*It's been a pleasure!
