Trama: Nastasya ha trascorso la sua lunga esistenza tenendo il collo accuratamente coperto. Certo qualcuno, negli ultimi quattro secoli, ha visto l'oscuro disegno impresso sulla sua pelle con un amuleto rovente. Nessuno, però, che sia ancora vivo. Quanto tempo misura la vita di un immortale? Guerre, carestie e pestilenze durano il vapore di un respiro e il conto dei respiri si dimentica. Ma Nastasya non può dimenticare il massacro della sua famiglia. Carnefice d'Inverno lo chiamava la sua gente. Non era il protagonista di un'antica leggenda delle steppe, ma lo spietato predatore del Nord che, cinquecento anni prima, in uno sperduto villaggio di agricoltori, fece strage dei suoi genitori. She seeks refuge at a rehab for wayward immortals, where she meets the gorgeous, undeniably sexy Reyn, who seems inexplicably linked to her past.
Nastasya finally begins to deal with life, and even feels safe--until the night she learns that someone wants her dead.

Si nasce, si cresce, si fanno esperienze di vita, si invecchia e poi si muore.
L’essere umano ha un suo ciclo vitale e come tutto ciò ha un inizio, è inevitabile che abbia una fine.

Ma per la giovane Nastasya, c’è solo l’inizio e una lunga e infinita vita davanti davanti a lei, perché lei è immortale. Noi la possiamo ritenere una cosa bellissima (immaginate vivere per sempre? Una meraviglia!), lei considera la sua condizione più una maledizione che un dono, perché porta su di sé un antico e mai dimenticato passato, fatto di lunghissimi anni di orrore e disperazione. Nastasya apparentemente dimostra diciotto anni  circa, a volte sembra un’adolescente ribelle, ma se l’adolescenza ha un suo inevitabile percorso, prima o poi questo percorso ha una fine, invece per lei è diverso, lei adolescente non lo è più da tanti, tanti secoli, se non nell’aspetto. In realtà di anni ne ha quattrocentoventinove; sono tanti, ma proprio tanti, i suoi occhi hanno visto di tutto, vissuto di tutto, guerre, carestie, modi di vivere, omicidi e cambi di potere. Ha visto persone amate morire, abbandonarla e lasciarla da sola. Secoli vissuti cercando di dimenticare,  troppo tempo  in cui errori, comportamenti sbagliati, ribellioni, menefreghismo verso l’ intero genere umano, le hanno cucito addosso una corazza.
Ha passato la sua intera esistenza cercando di soffocare il suo essere “se stessa”, il suo aspetto e violentando la sua stessa anima, soffocando la sua natura, ma se il cambio di colore o il taglio di capelli e il look cambiano l’aspetto di una persona, tutto questo non può cambiare il nostro “io” specialmente per un’immortale con il dono della magia, retaggio di un’antica stirpe .

Lei non pratica la magia, la magia la far star male, le trasmette malessere e questo suo rifiuto ad usarla anche a fin di bene, la porta a far scelte di vita che la conducono sempre più sull’orlo del baratro, a vivere una vita sbagliata, facendo una vita sregolata, a frequentare giovani, si fa dire, sbandati come lei, suoi simili che non esitano a far uso della magia, quella sbagliata; perché loro usano quella oscura per far del male alle persone, finché dopo l’ultimo e sconvolgente fatto accaduto, decide una volta per tutte di abbandonare tutto e tutti per cercare di vivere al meglio, dimenticare e dare un senso alla sua vita .
La disperazione la porta infine a vivere in una comunità di immortali, gente semplice che ha accettato la loro vita per quello che è, e se il passato non cambia, il futuro può, basta volerlo.
La vita insieme a loro si basa su cose semplici, lavorare, coltivare la terra, accudire gli animali, fare i turni per tutto, per cucinare, per pulire,  lavoro e ancora solo lavoro; la frase classica “il lavoro nobilita l’uomo “ qui è il comandamento della comunità.

E se Nastasya trova all’inizio tutto ciò insopportabile, pian piano con l’aiuto della sua nuova famiglia riesce a trovare la dimensione, la pace cercata da secoli. La trova nelle piccole cose della vita, nella terra, nei pasti passati in compagnia, con cibi semplici, la trova con persone meravigliose che si sono lasciati la vita passata  alle spalle, che la aiutano, e soprattutto non fanno mai domande
La carismatica e millenaria Riven, il vissuto Jess, l’empatica Anne e gli altri personaggi aiutano la giovane a imparare a voler bene a se stessa e usare al meglio la magia di cui è dotata.
E poi c’è l’immortale Reyn, il giovane che sembra un vichingo quanto è bello; tra di loro scorre inconsapevolmente una sorta di amore odio, che dovranno imparare a gestire, ma se vince l’odio o l’amore è tutto da vedere.
Mi fermo qui, non vorrei raccontare troppo del libro.
Inizialmente di questo libro ho pensato: Santo cielo, un altro paranormale young adults! Intendiamoci: a me piacciono i libri paranormali e non per i giovani lettori, ma ultimamente spuntano fuori più delle lumache dopo la pioggia!

Invece sono rimasta felicemente sorpresa nello scoprire che non è così, almeno io non lo classifico come tale. Mi piace moltissimo la copertina, uno dei pochi casi in cui la preferisco alla cover originale. Anche se non mi piacciono tanto i libri raccontati in prima persona, oramai mi sono rassegnata! Devo dire che la storia mi ha appassionato non all’inizio, ma dopo un centinaio di pagine quando il tutto comincia a prendere forma.
Ho trovato il libro molto raccontato, lo avrei preferito con più dialoghi, ma sono consapevole che essendo una trilogia, la storia doveva essere raccontata e questo in verità succede man mano che il libro va avanti intrigandomi sempre di più, e sicuramente tutto il resto lo vedremo nei prossimi libri.
Il libro è scritto molto bene, i dialoghi e le situazioni mai scontati, e a tratti alcune frasi a effetto mi hanno stappato più di un sorriso.
Spero che la traduzione e la pubblicazione dei restanti libri sia fatta a  breve c’è ancora tanto da raccontare, da capire, da scoprire e sono molto curiosa di sapere come si snoda la vicenda tra Nastasya e Reyn, perché ci saranno sicuramente ostacoli da superare, situazioni spiacevoli e piacevoli, e tutto il passato che entrambi hanno imparato ad accettare ma che non sarà mai dimenticato.
Mi è piaciuta tanto l’evoluzione di Nastasya, la sua decisione di abbandonare l’oscurità per dirigersi verso la luce, il suo accettare e poi alla fine amare la sola persona che più di tutte può aiutarla a trovare una dimensione nella sua lunga vita: ossia se stessa.

A lifetime begins with a birth, which is followed by growing and facing experiences, then comes the aging and at the end the death. A human being has its own life cycle, and as all things that have a beginning they also have an end.

But, for the young Nastasya, there was only the beginning of an endlessly long life, because she is immortal. We might consider it a marvellous thing (Imagine to live forever! A wonder!), but she considers her condition more as a curse than as a gift, having to carry as a burden a very old and never forgotten past, filled with long years of horror and desperation. Nastasya appears like an 18 year-old, giving the impression that she is a wayward adolescent. But the adolescence has its own inevitable course which ends after a certain time, but for her, it is different, for she has stopped being adolescent centuries ago in all aspects except the physical one. To be exact, she is 429 years old; it is a very, very long time, and her eyes have seen everything, lived everything, from wars to famines, from murders and changes of lifestyle to changes of power. She saw her beloved ones die, abandoning her all alone. For too many years she has been trying to forget and too many years in which the mistakes, wrong doings, rebellions and the indifference towards the entire human race made her heart harden.
She spent her entire life trying to suffocate her “being herself”, changing her appearance, violating her own soul, annihilating her own spirit. But if the change of hair colour or its cut can change one’s outward appearance, it certainly cannot change one’s personality, especially if that person is an immortal with a gift for magic, a gift inherited through a very ancient bloodline.
She doesn’t practice magic, it makes her feel bad and unease and this refusal to use the magic even for a good cause has brought her to make choices that caused her to live on the edge, to live a wrong life full of excesses. She hangs around with her likes, who do not hesitate to use magic. But they use the wrong kind of magic, the black one, and they do it to hurt persons. Until, after the last shocking incident she doesn’t decide to abandon everything and everybody and to try to live for the best, forgetting the past and giving a new sense to her life.

Her desperation will bring her at the end to join a community of immortals, a group of simple persons who accepted what they are, and if the past cannot be changed, the future can - it is enough that you to want to.
The life in the community is based on very simple principles – working, cropping, attending the animals, cooking, cleaning. All the work is done in turns, and it is always work and only work. The saying “work ennobles man”, is their moto.
At the beginning Nastasya sees her new life as unbearable, but, very slowly, with the help of her new family, she finds a new dimension and the peace that was eluding her for centuries. Shi finds it in those very small things in life, in the soil, in the meals shared with somebody, in the simple food; she finds it with marvellous persons who left their pasts behind, who are there to help her, and the most important, who do not ask questions.
There is the charismatic and more than a thousand years old Riven, the very experienced Jess, the emphatic Anne and many other characters who will be there to teach this young girl how to love herself and the magic that she is gifted with.
And then, there is the immortal Reyn, a young man, so handsome to resemble a Viking. There is a love-and-hate relationship between them that they are not completely aware of and which they will have to learn to control, but, which of the two feelings will prevail, remains to be seen.
I shall stop here, I would not want to reveal too much.

My initial reaction to this book was: “Heavens, another Young adults paranormal!” Let me make myself clear: I like the paranormal genre books, but recently they are popping out like mushrooms after the rain!
But, contrary to the expectations, I was very positively surprised, starting with the cover, which I liked and even preferred to the original one. The first person narration is not my favourite one, but I accept it as an inevitable writing style and this book is no exception! I have to admit that the story did not thrill me from the very beginning, but only after the first hundred pages, when the plot starts having a more defined form.
The story is mostly in the form of narration, and sometimes I was missing some more dialogue, but, being a trilogy, I am aware that the narrative part is very important, and done in a progressive way throughout the whole book, making me more curious with every page, and I am sure there is much more to come in the following books.
The story is written well, the dialogues and the circumstances in it are never to be taken for granted, and more than once the quotes which were used made me laugh.
I hope that the remaining two books will not wait long to be translated and published in Italy. There is so much more to be told, to understand and to discover. I am very curious to find out how the story of Nastasya and Reyn will evolve, because there will certainly be some difficulties to overcome, both pleasant and unpleasant situations, and above all, the past that they both learned how to accept, but that can never be forgotten.

I liked very much Nastasya’s emotional growth, her decision to abandon the obscure and to walk towards the light, and finally, to accept the only person that could help her find the meaning for her endless life: herself.
