Hi Toni and welcome to our site, it’s a pleasure to have you as a guest! This month you will debut in the Italian market with TEMPT ME TONIGHT.  Would you like to introduce yourself  to our audience ?

Thanks for inviting me!  I’m thrilled that TEMPT ME TONIGHT is coming out in Italy, not only for the opportunity to gain new readers but because I was fortunate enough to travel to Italy a few years ago and it’s truly one of my very favorite places in the world!  I’ve been published in romantic fiction since 1998, with approximately 20 novels to my credit, and I feel very fortunate to do what I love for a living.   

Ciao Toni e benvenuta sul nostro sito! E’ un piacere averti come nostra ospite! Questo mese debutti in Italia con il romanzo UNA NOTTE PER SEMPRE.  Ti andrebbe dunque di presentarti alle nostre lettrici?

Grazie per avermi invitata! Sono felicissima che UNA NOTTE PER SEMPRE venga pubblicato in Italia. E questo non solo perché avrò un pubblico più vasto, ma anche perché ho avuto la fortuna di visitare l’Italia qualche anno fa e posso dire che è uno dei miei luogi più preferiti al mondo! Scrivo letteratura romantica dal 1998, ho all’attivo quasi 20 romanzi e mi sento fortunata di poter vivere del lavoro che amo. 

Being a writer was a secret dream of yours, as it is of many women. How did you succeed and made it happen?

I wanted to be a novelist from when I was ten years old, but I abandoned the dream for awhile, having been told it was unrealistic.  But when I was in my late 20s, I woke up one day feeling a little dissatisfied with my life and I realized I didn’t want to grow old wondering if I could have succeeded as a writer.  It’s taken a tremendous amount of hard work and dedication, along with a willingness to always keep learning – about both the craft and the market – and there have been many, many ups and downs in my career, so it’s not for the faint of heart.  But for me, it’s really been about perseverance, believing in myself, and loving what I do enough not to quit.

Come molte donne, anche tu sognavi di divenire scrittrice. In che maniera sei riuscita a realizzare questo sogno?

Desideravo essere una scrittrice dall’età di dieci anni, ma per un periodo avevo abbandonato questo sogno, avendo sentito dire troppe volte che non era realistico. Tuttavia un giorno, arrivata vicino alla soglia dei trent’anni, mi sono svegliata e ho capito che non facevo una vita soddisfacente e che non volevo invecchiare con il rimorso di non aver mai provato a realizzarmi come scrittrice. Mi ci sono voluti enorme lavoro ed enorme devozione, insieme a tanta voglia di imparare – sia il mestiere che le regole del mercato editoriale –  e ho attraversato molti alti e bassi nella mia carriera, dunque vi dico che non è una strada per i deboli di cuore. Per me, si è trattato di perseveranza, fiducia in me stessa, e tanto amore per quello che faccio, abbastanza da non mollare.

When and in which way you came to choose what I consider a trademark of yours: novels that are both sweet and hot?  Market request or the discovery you had gift for it?

It was very much just discovering that this was my natural talent.  And for a while, it really didn’t fit the market at all – it took a long time for publishers to decide readers might be open to that combination.  For me, it works because most people are not all one way or another – most of us have our lighter, sweeter sides and also our darker, more hidden desires.  I like shining a light on that and creating characters who are as multi-faceted as most real people are.

Quando e come hai intrapreso la direzione verso quello che io chiamo il tuo marchio di fabbrica: romanzi che sono nello stesso tempo teneri e bollenti?

Principalmente si è trattato della scoperta del mio talento naturale. E per un periodo non è molto apprezzato dal mercato. Ci è voluto un pò di tempo prima che gli editori si convincessero che questa combinazione poteva interessare i lettori. Per me è uno stile che funziona sempre, perché la maggior parte di noi non è fatta solo in una data maniera  – quasi tutti avranno un lato più tenero e leggero e uno più legato ai nostri desideri intimi e nascosti. Mi piace portare in superficie questo aspetto, creando  protagonisti con molte sfaccettature, come in realtà sono la maggior parte delle persone.

The books you wrote for Avon Red are very steamy and sexy without being gross, not such an easy task for a contemporary novel nowadays, where vulgarity seems on the rise. How do you achieve that?

Thank you!  And I think my answer is linked very much to what I said up above – that it’s about trying to capture something real.  Real life sex can be super steamy and sexy without being over the top or mega extreme.  To me, that’s the ideal, so I try to write what I personally would consider ideal sex. : )  And that definitely involves capturing both the physical parts but also the emotional parts – what are the characters feeling, and what is driving them to open up to each other in such intimate ways?  That’s what I’m always trying to get on the page.

I romanzi che hai scritto per la collana Avon Red sono molto bollenti e sexy, senza però essere scurrili, un traguardo non molto facile da raggiungere in un romanzo contemporaneo, dove sembra che ultimamente la volgarità sia sempre più diffusa. Come riesci a ottenere un effetto simile?

Grazie! Penso che la mia riposta sia fondamentalmente collegata a quello che avevo già spiegato sopra – si tratta di catturare la realtà. Il sesso nella vita reale può benissimo essere bollente ed eccitante senza essere esagerato o estremo. Per me questa è la perfezione: descrivere il sesso così come lo vedo idealmente da un punto di vista personale. Questo sicuramente significa riuscire a catturare sia il lato fisico, che quello emotivo: cosa sentono i protagonisti,  cosa li spinge ad aprirsi l’uno all’altra intimamente? Questo è quello che cerco sempre di trasportare sulla carta.

Let’s talk about  TEMPT ME TONIGHT.  A former couple of teenage sweethearts meets again after many years and falls in love again. The plot is quite simple, but the intensity you managed to gave the story it is not. 

Thank you!  I personally think the intensity comes from the fact that Joe and Trish’s breakup when they were young was very dramatic and painful, and that neither of them ever really got over it.  They moved on with their lives, but they never really made peace with what happened back then.  So when they come back together unexpectedly much later in life, those same strong emotions from their youth flair again – and this time they have to deal with them.

Parliamo di UNA NOTTE PER SEMPRE. Due ex-fidanzatini del liceo che si incontrano dopo tanti anni e si innammorano di nuovo. La trama è molto semplice, ma l’intensità che sei riuscita a dare alla storia è tutt’altro che tale.

Grazie! Personalmente credo che l’intensità derivi dal fatto che l’allontanamento di Joe e Trish quando erano giovani  sia stato molto drammatico e doloroso e che non l’abbiano mai superato del tutto. Hanno continuato le loro vite, ma senza aver fatto pace con il passato. Perciò, quando inaspettatamente si incontrano di nuovo, quelle forti emozioni ritornano in superficie , solo che questa volta dovranno affrontarle.

I admit it, I have a soft point for Joe. He’s so sexy and yet so protective. He’s not perfect but is ready to make amend. Please tell us how did you create him?

I’m glad you liked Joe so much.  I must admit that of all my heroes, he has definitely been one of the most popular among readers.  I try to create romantic heroes who are strong and lovable and sexy, but who also have a flaw or two, and who have something in them that needs to be healed.  And Joe soon realizes that what’s wrong with him can only be healed by Trish – if she’ll only give him a chance.  Basically, I try to create a guy like most women want to fall in love with – and that includes the fact that, secretly, most women want to feel they have the power to save a man from something, and to be the only one who can.  And what’s sexier than a strong man?  A strong man who also has a weak spot, a vulnerability, and if you’re the woman who can help him deal with that, it makes you feel very special. : )

Devo ammettere che ho un debole per Joe. E’ molto sexy e, nello stesso tempo, molto protettivo. Non è perfetto, ma cerca di rimediare agli errori del passato. Potresti dirci come hai creato questo personaggio?

Sono felice che Joe ti sia piaciuto così tanto. Devo ammettere che tra tutti i miei eroi lui è uno dei preferiti tra le lettrici. Cerco di creare eroi romantici che siano nello stesso tempo forti, amabili e sexy, ma anche con qualche pecca, e con qualcosa dentro che ha bisogno di essere guarito. E Joe presto capisce che può essere guarito solo da Trish –  se soltanto lei gli desse un’occasione. Sostanzialmente, cerco di creare un uomo del quale si inamorrerebbe la maggior parte delle donne, e questo include il fatto che la maggioranza delle donne, intimamente, desidera sentire di avere il potere di salvare un uomo da qualcosa e di essere le uniche con il potere di farlo. E che cosa c’è di più sexy di un uomo forte? Un uomo forte con un punto debole, qualcosa che lo rende vulnerabile, e se sei proprio tu la donna che può aiutarlo ad affrontarlo, questo ti fa sentire molto speciale.: )

A question that cannot be avoided: what do you feel when you have to write a sex scene? What’ s your method, if you have one?

To be honest, I’ve written so many sex scenes at this point in my career that it comes very naturally now.  But from the start, it has always been, for me, about getting deep into the heads and hearts of the characters I’m writing about.  It’s not about what I’m feeling but about what they’re feeling – so I try to “become” the characters as much as I possibly can.  And most of the time, the sex scene turns out not to be so much about the sex itself as about what the sex made the characters feel, both inside and out, and how it changed their relationship.

Una domanda inevitabile: come ti senti quando devi descrivere una scena di sesso? Hai un metodo, e se sì, quale?

Onestamente, ne ho scritte  così tante scene di sesso, che ora mi viene molto naturale . Ma sin all’inizio per me si è sempre trattato di entrare nel profondo dei pensieri e dei cuori dei protagonisti che stavo creando. Non si tratta di quello che sento io, ma di ciò che sentono loro. Cerco, per quanto è possibile, di “diventare” loro. E così, nella maggior parte dei casi, la scena di sesso diventa incentrata non sull’atto stesso, ma su quello che i protagonisti provano in quel momento, sia dentro che fuori, e in quale modo ciò cambia il loro rapporto emotivo. 

What does your husband  says about your writing (about the sexy side of it too): does he provide you with inspiration and suggestions?

My husband is very proud of me and very supportive, but he actually keeps himself very separate from my work. ; )  He’s actually not a big reader of fiction, and though he knows I write sexy books, he’s read very little of what I’ve written.  The curse of both being workaholics. ; )

Quale è l’opinione di tuo marito sulla tua scrittura (anche sul lato sexy) ? E’ fonte di  ispirazione e consigli?

Mio marito è molto orgoglioso  di me e ho il suo pieno sostegno, ma comunque mantiene una sana distanza dal mio lavoro. Effettivamente lui non è un grande amante della letteratura di evasione, e anche se sa che scrivo i libri con un alto grado di sensualità, ha letto poco di quello che ho scritto. E’ la maledizione di essere entrambi due maniaci di lavoro.

What are you working on right now and which are your future projects?

Since the publication of TEMPT ME TONIGHT in the U.S., I’ve embarked on a series of connected books called The Destiny Series, which all take place in the small fictional town of Destiny, Ohio.  Fortunately, the series has been very successful, and Book 5, WILLOW SPRINGS, will come out here this July.  Right now, I’m preparing to write Book 6, which is not yet titled.  That book is the last on my current contract, so I’m not sure what will come after that, but I have lots of ideas bubbling in my head.

Su che cosa stai lavorando in questo momento e quali sono i tuoi progetti futuri?

Dopo la pubblicazione di  UNA NOTTE PER SEMPRE negli USA, ho cominciato la stesura di una serie di libri collegati tra loro, intitolata The Destiny, ambientati in una cittadina fittizia chiamata Destiny, in Ohio. Fortunatamente,la serie finora ha ottenuto grande successo, e il quinto libro,dal titolo WILLOW SPRINGS, sarà pubblicato a luglio. Al momento sto lavorando sul libro no. 6, che è ancora senza titolo. Inoltre, questo è l’ultimo libro previsto nel mio contratto, perciò ancora non sono sicura su cosa lavorerò dopo, ma ho già una miriade di idee per in testa!
