John Grayston, seventh Viscount Rochdale, has never refused a wager, especially one that involves enticing a beautiful woman into his bed. He’s willing to stake his most prized possession that there’s not a single woman in all of England immune to his charms. But when the object of the wager is the prim and proper Grace Marlowe, he has to turn on the full force of his seductive charm to woo her.

Grace, the widow of a famous bishop, finds her stalwart virtue put to the test when the infamous rake shows an unexpected interest in her. Outraged, flattered, and reluctantly attracted, she soon finds herself falling under the spell of the man behind the scandalous reputation. Rochdale, in turn, is delighted to discover a fiery passion beneath the widow’s prudish façade. But when hearts and lives become tangled in the gamble, the truth of his seduction could ruin everything ...

First of all I must say that this trilogy should be read in a row. I didn’t do that and it has been a while since I had read the others and so I was a bit lost in the beginning. I was looking forward to have Rochdale pursuing Grace and I felt we had jumped right to the middle of the story and skipped that part. I needed more angst and emotional struggling while he did the pursuing and it never really happened.
I thought Grace was a bit too good and correct and righteous in the beginning but she soon starts feeling unnerved and attracted to Rochdale which gave her a more human dimension.
Rochdale is not in the beginning the most endearing person, although he is the rake with a mysterious past that might be appealing the reason why he decided to pursue Grace was to win a wager. As the story progresses however we find out a bit more about his past and his actions show that he is ready to be reformed. Not through Grace’s love but because deep down he was once a good man and his current behaviour is starting to torment and disgust him. I thought it was rather believable that his change comes from inside instead of his current amorous feelings.
He has a crisis of conscience on how to tell or avoid telling Grace about the wager when he realizes that in fact he has deep feelings for her but since this is a romance and some conflict is needed she finds out from a third party and breaks off with him. It was predictable that they would make up and the fact that Hern added another conflict just before the end really didn’t add much to the story imho. In the end it was a light and funny read good to spend an afternoon with but without the emotional depth to make it stand out.

John Grayston, settimo visconte di Rochdale, non si è mai tirato indietro davanti a una scommessa, specialmente quando consiste nell’attirare una bellissima donna nel proprio letto. E’ pronto a scommettere quanto ha di più prezioso che non c’è una sola donna in tutta l’Inghilterra in grado di resistere al suo fascino. Ma visto che l’oggetto della scommessa è una donna seria e morigerata come Grace Marlowe, dovrà ricorrere a tutta la sua capacità di seduttore per conquistarla.

Grace, vedova di un famoso vescovo, scopre che la sua irreprensibile virtù è messa a dura prova dall’inaspettato interesse che il famigerato libertino mostra nei suoi confronti. Oltraggiata, adulata, e suo malgrado attratta, presto cade sotto l’incantesimo dell’uomo che si cela sotto una scandalosa reputazione. Rochdale, a sua volta, è al settimo cielo per la gioia quando scopre l’ardente passione che si nasconde sotto l’apparenza fin troppo per bene della vedova. Ma quando alla scommessa si intrecciano i loro cuori e le loro vite, la verità che si nasconde dietro alle manovre deduttive del visconte potrebbe rovinare ogni cosa...

Prima di tutto, devo dire che i libri di questa trilogia andrebbero letti rispettando la sequenza. Io non l’ho fatto, ed essendo passato un po’ di tempo da quando avevo letto gli altri romanzi all’inizio di questo mi sono sentita un po’ persa. Aspettavo con ansia il momento di vedere Rochdale fare la corte a Grace, e invece mi sono sentita catapultata nel bel mezzo della storia senza aver avuto la possibilità di assistere a quella parte del racconto. Mi sarebbe piaciuto che il suo tormento e le sue lotte interiori mentre la corteggiava avessero più spazio, ma questa parte della vicenda nel libro non c’è.
Grace all’inizio mi è sembrata un po’ troppo perbenino, ma presto comincia a sentirsi a disagio e confusa per l’attrazione che prova per Rochdale, e questo le dà una dimensione più umana.
Rochdale all’inizio non è un personaggio molto simpatico: benché sia un dongiovanni con un passato misterioso, e la cosa potrebbe essere intrigante, in fondo la ragione per cui ha deciso di sedurre Grace è pur sempre vincere una scommessa. Man mano che la storia procede, comunque, scopriamo un po’ più cose sul suo passato, e le sue azioni dimostrano che è pronto a cambiare vita. Non grazie all’amore per Grace, ma perchè in fondo una volta era una brava persona, e il suo comportamento attuale sta cominciando a disgustarlo e tormentarlo. Mi è sembrato molto credibile il fatto che l’origine della sua trasformazione sia dentro di lui, anziché essere il risultato dei sentimenti che prova. Quando si accorge di nutrire per Grace dei sentimenti profondi, ha una crisi di coscienza, perchè non sa se dirle della scommessa o evitare di dirglielo, ma visto che siamo in un romance e quindi un conflitto ci vuole, lei scopre la faccenda tramite terzi e rompe con lui. Era prevedibile che avrebbero fatto la pace, ed il fatto che la Hern abbia aggiunto un altro conflitto appena prima della conclusione a mio avviso non aggiunge granché alla storia. Tutto sommato, DAMA LICENZIOSA è una lettura leggera e divertente, un buon modo di passare un pomeriggio, ma non ha una profondità emotiva tale da farlo risaltare rispetto alla media dei romanzi.
