Joy Nash grew up writing and illustrating fantasy. As a child, she created the alternate universe Blurpland-peopled by loveable hairy purple characters - in both words and pictures. Sadly, none of this early work remains extant. As an adult, Joy's creative endeavors first centered in the visual arena. Graduating with high honors from the university of Notre Dame, she launched a career in architecture.
In 2000, she returned to her love of the written world, and pursued a dream of writing the kind of book she loves to read - romance. She loves to conjure worlds in which her characters - alike her children - do what she tells them to.
Over the years, Joy has made her home in such diverse places as Florida, Indiana, Upstate New York, Rome Italy. She now lives in her native Pennsylvania with her very own gallant hero, her three children and a liver-spotted Dalmatian.

1 - You have Italian origins and have been living in Italy for some years. Due to this and to your love for ancient times, haven't you ever thought of setting some of your novels in Italy?

My father was born in Riccia di Campobasso, a small hill town in Molise. He emigrated to the United States when he was fourteen. My mother's parents emigrated from Calabria in the early 1900s. Unfortunately, I didn't speak Italian fluently as a child, but I knew some words and phrases. I started studying the language seriously in college.

I first visited Italy when I was nine years old, and have been visited several times since. I've only lived full-time in Italy for one year, when I was in college in 1981/82. I studied architecture in Rome as part of the University of Notre Dame School of Architecture Rome Studies Program. It was a very exciting year, because I'd always dreamed of living in Italy.

Funny you should ask about setting my novels in Italy, because the story I'm working on right now is set in Rome! "The Offering" is a novella that will appear in a Feb 09 urban paranormal anthology "Immortals: The Reckoning". My previous Immortals book, "The Awakening" (8/07), began in Rome, before the action moved to Scotland. Kalen, my Immortal warrior hero from The Awakening is the son of the Etruscan goddess Uni. Kalen started his life as a guardian/teacher to the ancient Etruscans.

My historical Druids of Avalon series takes place in Roman Britain. Many of the characters in that novel are Roman, or of mixed Roman/Celtic heritage.

1 - Data la tua origine italiana, e la predilezione per i periodi storici più antichi, non hai mai pensato ad ambientare qualche romanzo in Italia, dove peraltro hai vissuto anche alcuni anni?

Mio padre è nato a Riccia di Campobasso, un piccolo paese collinare in Molise. E' emigrato negli Stati Uniti quando aveva quattordici anni. I genitori di mia madre emigrarono dalla Calabria agli inizi del 1900. Sfortunatamente, da piccola non parlavo correntemente l'italiano, ma conoscevo alcune parole e frasi. Ho iniziato a studiare seriamente la lingua al college.
Ho visitato l'Italia per la prima volta quando avevo nove anni, e da allora l'ho visitata diverse volte. Ho vissuto in Italia per un anno, quando ero al college negli anni 1981 e 1982. Ho studiato architettura a Roma, nell’ambito del Programma di Studi Romani della Scuola di Architettura dell’Università di Notre Dame, E' stato un anno molto eccitante perchè avevo sempre sognato di vivere in Italia.

Buffo che tu mi faccia questa domanda sull'ambientazione italiana, perchè la storia su cui sto lavorando in questo momento è ambientata proprio a Roma! "The Offering" è un racconto che apparirà a Febbraio 2009 nell'Antologia paranormale "Immortals : The Reckoning". Il mio precedente romanzo della serie Immortals, "The Awakening" (8/07), inizia a Roma, prima che la trama si sposti in Scozia. Kalen, il mio eroe immortale di The Awakening è il figlio di una dea Etrusca, Uni. Kalen ha iniziato la sua vita come guardiano e insegnante degli antichi Etruschi.

La mia serie storica Druids of Avalon, è ambientata nella Britannia romana. Molti dei miei personaggi in quel romanzo sono Romani, o di sangue misto romano / celta.

2 - Where does your love for Celtic culture, mythology and magic come from?

I love all mythology and folklore. I have quite an extensive collection, from the traditional European fairy tales I loved as a child, to Greek/Roman mythology I studied in school, to the Native American, African, and Celtic mythology I've encountered as an adult. I've got a mental note to explore Indian, Asian, and Pacific mythology in the future. I've especially enjoyed Italo Calvino's wonderful collection of Italian Folktales. I have copies in both Italian and English.

2 - Da dove deriva il suo amore per la magia e per l'antico mondo celtico?

Amo tutto ciò che riguarda la mitologia e il folklore. Ho una collezione piuttosto grande, dalle tradizionali favole europee che amavo da bambina, alla mitologia Greca / Romana che ho studiato a scuola, alle mitologie dei nativi americani, africani e Celti che ho conosciuto da adulta. Ho una mezza idea di esplorare anche le mitologie Indiane, Asiatiche e del Pacifico in futuro. Mi è particolarmente piaciuta la meravigliosa collezione di racconti tradizionali Italiani di Italo Calvino, che ho sia in italiano che in inglese.

3 - How did your transition from architect to writer take place? does writing a book have anything in common with starting a project?

I began writing when my children were young. I was no longer working full time as an architect, and I found I needed a creative outlet. I found I loved creating whole worlds, not just the buildings in them! The creative process is similar whether you are designing a building or a novel. First comes an idea, then a rough draft or sketch, then the details are refined. I think that being familiar with the process in my architecture career helped me when I decided to write a book.

3 - Come è avvenuto il passaggio dall'essere architetto all'essere scrittrice? C'è qualche similitudine tra la nascita di un progetto e quella di un romanzo?

Ho iniziato a scrivere quando i miei figli erano piccoli. Non lavoravo già più a tempo pieno come architetto, e mi accorsi che avevo bisogno di uno sfogo creativo. Scoprii che amavo creare interi mondi, non solo i loro palazzi! Il processo creativo è simile sia che tu stia disegnando un palazzo o un romanzo. Per prima viene l'idea, poi una bozza o uno schizzo, alla fine vengono curati i dettagli. Penso che il fatto che questo processo mi sia stato famigliare, vista la mia carriera di architetto, mi sia stato d'aiuto quando decisi di scrivere un libro.

4 - How do you look for historical details and information? Are you visiting the places you write of in your novels?

I look everywhere - books, articles, the Internet, movies, conversations with people who might know the answer to questions I have about history. It was a wonderful pleasure to visit England, Wales, and Scotland a few years ago, where I visited places associated with my books. I loved visiting the Roman fort Vindolanda, along Hadrian's Wall, the setting for "Celtic Fire", and the Scottish settings in "Immortals: The Awakening". By far the most thrilling part of the trip was visiting Caerleon, Wales, the site of the Roman fortress town of Isca Silurum. The Roman characters in "The Grail King" and "Deep Magic" live in this city. The weekend we visited, historical re-enactors were hosting a Roman Army encampment, with Roman army demonstrations held in the ruins of the Roman amphitheatre, with tents set nearby showing many facets of life in Roman Britain. There was even a group of Gladiator re-enactors from Rome performing. A slave auction scene in "The Grail King" is set in this very amphitheater!

4 - Come effettui le tue ricerche storiche? Visiti i luoghi descritti nei tuoi romanzi?

Cerco in ogni dove - libri, articoli, internet, films, conversazioni con persone che possono conoscere le risposte alle mie domande sulla storia. E' stato bellissimo visitare l'Inghilterra, il Galles e la Scozia alcuni anni fa, dove ho potuto vedere i luoghi che descrivo nei miei libri. Mi è piaciuto visitare il forte Romano Vindolanda, lungo il Vallo di Adriano, l'ambientazione di "Celtic Fire", e l'ambientazione Scozzese di "Immortals: The Awakening". Finora la parte più elettrizzante del mio viaggio è stato visitare Caerleon, in Galles, il luogo dove sorgeva la città fortificata romana Isca Silurum.
I personaggi Romani di "The Grail King" e "Deep Magic" vivono in questa città. Nel fine settimana in cui l'abbiamo visitata, avevano organizzato una rivistazione storica dell'accampamento dell'esercito romano, con dimostrazioni tenute nelle rovine dell'anfiteatro romano, con tende tutto intorno che mostravano le varie parti della vita della Britannia romana. C'era anche un gruppo di gladiatori impersonati da attori romani. Una scena di vendita di schiavi in "The Grail King" è ambientata proprio in questo anfiteatro!

Date uno sguardo alla mia giornata passata a Isca Silurum nel mio blog. Gli attori che impersonavano l'esercito romano erano britannici, ma gli affascinanti e sexy gladiatori erano italiani!

5 - Can you anticipate us something about the future developments of your Avalon series? How will the books connect to each other, through recurring characters or plot elements?
Is your Avalon series connected in some extent to the Arthurian legends and the Holy Grail quest?


In "The Grail King", the hero and heroine search for a lost grail. In "Deep Magic", the legendary sword Exchalybur is forged. Both those books take place in second century Britain. In the third book in the series, "Silver Silence", things will get a little more mystical, when the Druids realize that Avalon's magic reaches through time. Breena, a young Druidess who is the daughter of my Roman hero and Celtic heroine from "Celtic Fire", travels three hundred years into the future. She emerges into a Britain struggling with the loss of the Roman army's protection and invasion by brutal Saxon warlords. There's a magical menace as well: the forces of dark magic are working to prevent the birth of King Arthur, who is the direct descendant of Breena's Roman half-brother, Marcus.

6 - Puoi anticiparci come si svilupperà questa tua nuova serie chiamata Avalon? In che modo sono collegati i singoli libri, tramite i personaggi o attraverso una trama comune?
La tua serie Avalon si ricollega in qualche modo alla leggenda arturiana e alla ricerca del sano graal?

In "The Grail King", l'eroe e l'eroina sono alla ricerca di un perduto Graal. In "Deep Magic", viene forgiata la leggendaria spada Exchalybur. Entrambi questi libri sono ambientati nel secondo secolo in Britannia. Nel terzo libro della serie, "Silver Silence", le cose assumeranno una sfumatura un po' più mistica, quando i Druidi si accorgeranno che la magia di Avalon oltrepassa le barriere del tempo.
Breena, una giovane sacerdotessa druida, figlia dell'eroe romano e dell'eroina celta di "Celtic Fire", viaggia trecento anni nel futuro, e giunge in una Britannia che si dibatte tra la perdita della protezione delle legioni romane e le invasioni dei brutali capi Sassoni. C'è anche una minaccia magica: le forze della magia nera sono al lavoro per impedire la nascita di Re Artù, il diretto discendente del fratellastro romano di Breena, Marcus.

 7 - Your novel The Awakening belongs to the Immortals series, which includes four books by  three different authors - how was your experience of co-operation with other fellow writers? Did you have any kind of common guidelines to follow, or were all of you free to express yourself as you thought best? Was it a positive experience, and are you going to repeat it any soon?

I worked with two other talented authors on the Immortals series - Jennifer Ashley and Robin T. Popp. I hadn't met either of them before my editor invited me to join the project. We got along very well. I must admit, it was challenging and more time-consuming to write a book in a connected series. Jennifer, Robin and I constantly emailed each other, and spent a good bit of time making sure the magical elements and timeline of our books agreed.

The Immortals books were so well received that all of us signed on for round two of the series, which will include three novels and an anthology. My contribution is "Immortals: The Crossing", which will be out in October 2008.

7 - Il tuo romanzo The Awakening appartiene alla serie Immortals, che comprende quattro libri di tre diverse autrici - come è stato collaborare con altre autrici? C'era una traccia comune che dovevate seguire, o ognuna di voi era libera di esprimersi come desiderava?
E' stata un'esperienza positiva, e tornerai a ripeterla nel prossimo futuro?

Ho lavorato con altre due autrici di talento nella serie Immortals - Jennifer Ashley e Robin T. Popp. Non avevo incontrato nessuna di loro prima che il mio editore mi invitasse ad unirmi al progetto. Ce la siamo cavata insieme molto bene. Devo ammettere, è stato molto più impegnativo sia come sfida sia come tempo, scrivere un libro collegato a una serie. Jennifer, Robin ed io ci scrivevamo costantemente email, e abbiamo passato un bel po' di tempo ad assicurarci che gli elementi magici e la successione degli eventi dei nostri libri combaciassero.

I libri della serie Immortals sono stati così ben accettati che tutte noi abbiamo firmato per una seconda parte della serie, che includerà tre romanzi e un'antologia. Il mio contributo sarà "Immortals : The Crossing", che verrà pubblicato nell'Ottobre 2008.

8 - Many of your characters and the magic elements of your novels are mostly connected to Celtic mythology - druids, sorcery, mystical creatures, ghosts... are you going to explore different paranormal themes in future, as for instance shapeshifters and vampires?

There are shapeshifters in my Druids of Avalon books. Two Druids, a twin brother and sister, have shapeshifting power. They have to hide this talent, as it's forbidden on Avalon. Rhys shifts into a merlin, Gwendolyn into a wolf.

As for vampires - I'm working on my first vampire right now! The hero of my novella for the Immortals anthology (Feb 09) is a vampire.

8 - Molti dei tuoi personaggi e degli elementi magici che si trovano nei tuoi romanzi si ricollegano per la maggior parte alla tradizione celtica - druidi, magia, creature mistiche, fantasmi ... hai intenzione di esplorare altri aspetti del paranormale in futuro, come per esempio vampiri, mutaforma?

Ci sono mutaforma nei miei romanzi della serie Druids of Avalon. Due druidi, fratello e sorella gemelli, hanno potere di mutare forma. Devono nascondere questa loro dote, poichè ad Avalon è proibita. Rhys si tramuta in un falco, Gwendolyn in un lupo.

Per quanto riguarda i vampiri, sto lavorando sul mio primo vampiro proprio ora! L'eroe del mio racconto per l'antologia della serie Immortals (Feb 2009) è un vampiro.

9 - You also write romantica, and you published some novels with Ellora's Cave, probably the first and by sure one of the most relevant publishers in this field. What do you think of romantica as a genre, and of the increasing popularity is getting by readers?

I published my first book, "Crystal Shadows", with Ellora's Cave. It's a fantasy romance in which a crystal scientist is pulled into a fantasy world where crystals are magic. She's mistaken for a dangerous sorceress, and is pursued by two powerful rival wizards. Although I didn't originally write the book specifically as romantica, it did very well at Ellora's Cave. I've met some wonderful people through my association with that publisher.

As far as the surge in the popularity of romantica - I think the great thing about the romance genre is how varied it is. There's something for everyone, from the sweetest romance where the characters don't go beyond a kiss, to the steamiest novels where nothing is left unrevealed. I think the diversity has made the romance genre stronger.

9 - Scrivi anche romantica, e hai pubblicato alcuni romanzi con Ellora's Cave, forse primo e sicuramente uno dei più importanti editori di questo genere. Cosa pensi di questo genere e del crescente successo che ha tra le lettrici?

Ho pubblicato il mio primo libro, "Crystal Shadows", con Ellora's Cave. E' un romance fantasy i cui una scienziata che studia i cristalli viene catapultata in un mondo fantastico dove i cristalli sono magici. Viene scambiata per una pericolosa strega e viene inseguita da due potenti maghi rivali. Anche se non ho scritto inizialmente questo libro perché fosse specificatamente romantica, ebbe molto successo in Ellora's Cave. Ho incontrato alcune persone meravigliose durante la mia collaborazione con quell'editore.

Per quanto riguarda la crescita della popolarità del genere romantica - penso che il grande pregio del genere romance sia la varietà. C'è qualcosa per tutti, dal romanzo più dolce dove i personaggi non fanno oltre il bacio, ai romanzi più bollenti dove niente viene lasciato nascosto. Penso che sia proprio il fatto di essere molto vario ad aver aumentato la forza di questo genere.

10 - Are you working to any new novel, right now? Can you tell us something about that?

I recently turned in my October 2008 release, "Immortals: The Crossing", in which an Immortal Celtic demigod pursues an intriguing death witch into Hell. I really enjoyed creating my own version of Dante's Inferno for this book! Right now I'm working on the Immortals anthology story, the one with the vampire hero. After that, it's on to the third Druids of Avalon book, "Silver Silence".

From Chapter Eight

The smithy door was open. Intent on his drawing, Marcus was not aware of Gwen's presence until she stood almost at his elbow. He jerked, his head whipping around. The back of his hand smacked the ink jar, knocking it over.
"Hades!" He righted the jar, but not before the ink spattered across the table.
"Oh! I'm sorry."
"No matter," Marcus mumbled, grabbing a rag he kept nearby just for this purpose. He sopped up the mess, scrubbing across his work table as Gwen snatched several drawings out of the spreading path of ink. "You can tell from the stains on the table I've spilled ink before."
He was a bumbling fool. And he'd proven it by nearly assaulting Gwen in the forest the day before, insulting her with the insinuation that she was needy enough to fall into his bed. Even if she were inclined to take a lover before sacrificing her life to her grandfather's choice of mate, what possessed him to think she would choose him? She hadn't even appeared at dinner afterward, pleading a headache. It had been plain enough to discern what that meant. He'd disgusted her with his crudity. He'd retreated to his smithy and spent half the night trying not to think about it.
But he'd known sooner or later he would have to face her. She needed him to forge her sword.
"Did ye not hear me enter?" she asked, laying his drawings on a clean spot on the table.
He straightened and looked at her. Her front teeth worried her lower lip, and her eyes avoided his gaze. Her cheeks were pink. She was nervous, he realized. Perhaps even as nervous as he.
His mood abruptly improved. "I get very absorbed in my work. Breena knows to bang loudly on the door."
"I'll remember that trick in the future."
Marcus felt her eyes on him as he crossed the room to dispose of the soiled rag in the barrel by the door. He was a disheveled mess, he knew. He'd slept in his clothes, and he had ink stains on his sleeves. He'd meant to bathe at dawn...
He glanced out the door. "Why it must be near noon," he said with some surprise.
"Past midday." Reluctant amusement threaded her voice. "Do not tell me ye were up all night again."
"No, I dropped like a stone right after dinner. I woke just after midnight, with a dream of a sword vivid in my mind. I started drawing..." he spread his hands. "It's often like this for me. I don't keep regular hours. Sometimes I get days and night completely switched around, arriving at dinner as if it were the morning meal.
 Other times I forget to eat at all." For the first time, he noticed the basket on her arm. His stomach rumbled in sudden hope. "Is that food?"
She laughed. The sound went right to his groin. He took the basket and half-turned to the table, not wanting her to notice.
"When ye did not appear to break your fast, nor to eat the midday meal, Rhiannon asked me to bring ye a bite," she said. "Meat and bread, and some cheese and apples."
Marcus had already uncovered the food and downed his first mouthful. "Thank you. I'm half-starved." He finished off a hunk of cheese and rooted around for an apple. He eyed her. "You look a little tired. Did you spend the night with Breena? Did she have another one of her dreams?"
"I stayed with Breena, but she had no dreams."
"Because of a spell you taught her?"
"Nay. She had no cause to try it. No vision came. She slept peacefully 'till morn."
"But you didn't?"
She blushed and looked away. "'Tis nothing new. I told ye, I often have difficulty sleeping."
He set his half-eaten apple aside.
"I could help with that," he said softly.

La porta della fucina era aperta. Assorto nel suo disegno, Marcus non si accorse della presenza di Gwen fino a che non fu accanto a lui. Sobbalzò, voltando di scatto la testa. Col dorso della mano rovesciò il vasetto dell'inchiostro, rovesciandolo.
"Per l'Inferno!" raddrizzò il vasetto, ma non in tempo per impedire che l'inchiostro si spandesse sulla tavola.
"Oh! Mi dispiace."
"Non importa," borbottò Marcus, afferrando uno straccio che teneva a portata di mano proprio per quell'evenienza. Asciugò il disastro, strofinando il suo tavolo da lavoro mentre Gwen toglieva alcuni disegni dalla traiettoria dell'inchiostro. "E' chiaro dalle macchie sul tavolo che mi è capitato ancora di rovesciare inchiostro."
Era uno sciocco maldestro. E l'aveva provato quasi assalendo Gwen nella foresta il giorno prima, insultandola con l'insinuazione che fosse pronta per finire nel suo letto. Anche se lei avesse avuto l'intenzione di farsi un amante prima di dedicare la sua vita a colui che suo nonno aveva scelto come suo sposo, cosa gli faceva credere che potesse scegliere lui? Dopo non era neppure venuta a cena, lamentandosi di avere mal di testa. Era stato chiaro a sufficienza da fare capire cosa significava. L'aveva disgustata con la sua crudezza. Si era ritirato nella sua fucina e aveva passato metà della notte a cercare di non pensarci.
Ma sapeva che prima o poi avrebbe dovuto affrontarla. Aveva bisogno che lui le forgiasse la spada.
"Non mi hai sentita entrare?" gli chiese, posando i suoi disegni in un punto pulito del tavolo.
Lui si raddrizzò e la guardò. Si mordeva il labbro inferiore con i denti, ed i suoi occhi evitavano il suo sguardo. Le sue guance erano rosate. Era nervosa, si accorse. Forse nervosa quanto lui.
Il suo umore migliorò bruscamente. "Mi concentro molto nel lavoro. Breena sa che deve bussare forte alla porta."
"Ricorderò quel trucco in futuro."
Marcus sentì gli occhi di lei su di lui mentre attraversava la stanza per buttare lo straccio sporco nel barile accanto alla porta. Sapeva di essere un disastro scarmigliato. Aveva dormito vestito, e aveva macchie d'inchiostro sulle maniche. Aveva avuto intenzione di lavarsi all'alba...
Guardò fuori della porta. "Deve essere quasi mezzogiorno," disse con una certa sorpresa.
"Mezzogiorno passato." la voce di lei era pervasa da un riluttante divertimento. "Non dirmi che sei stato alzato di nuovo tutta la notte."
"No, mi sono addormentato come un sasso appena dopo cena. Mi sono solo svegliato appena dopo mezzanotte, con il sogno di una spada stampato nella mente. Ho iniziato a disegnare..." allargò le braccia. "E' così che accade spesso con me. Non seguo le ore regolarmente. A volte scambio completamente la notte col giorno, arrivando a cena come se fosse la colazione.
Altre volte mi dimentico del tutto di mangiare." Per la prima volta, egli notò il cestino al suo braccio. Il suo stomacò brontolò con improvvisa speranza. "Quello è cibo?"
Lei rise. Il suono raggiunse diretto il suo inguine. Prese il cestino e si voltò un poco verso il tavolo, perchè lei non lo notasse.
"Quando non sei venuto a fare colazione, né a mangiare a mezzogiorno, Rhiannon mi ha chiesto di portarti un boccone," disse lei. "Carne e pane, e un po' di formaggio e mele."
Marcus aveva già scoperto il cibo e mandato giù il primo boccone. "Grazie. Sono affamato." Spazzò via un pezzo di formaggio e attaccò una mela. Le lanciò un'occhiata. "Sembri un po' stanca. Hai passato la notte con Breena? Ha avuto un altro dei suoi sogni?"
"Sono rimasta con Breena, ma non ha avuto sogni."
"Per quell'incantesimo che le hai insegnato?"
"No. Non aveva motivo di provarlo. Non ha avuto alcuna visione. Ha dormito pacificamente fino al mattino."
"Ma tu no?"
Lei arrossì e distolse lo sguardo. "Non è cosa nuova. Te l'ho detto, spesso ho difficoltà a dormire."
Marcus mise da parte la mela mezza mangiata.
"Potrei aiutarti per quello," disse lui con voce morbida.
