SECOND SIGHT - Amanda Quick

Novità per Amanda Quick !

È appena uscito negli USA il primo romanzo della sua nuova saga ambientata nell’epoca Vittoriana, dal titolo SECOND SIGHT, pubblicato dalla casa editrice Berkley Jove in edizione rilegata. Ogni romanzo della saga avrà come sfondo la Società Arcana, una misteriosa setta segreta dedita alle ricerche paranormali fondata nel 1600 da un alchimista, Sylvester Jones.

I protagonisti di SECOND SIGHT sono l’enigmatico Gabriel Jones, il Gran Maestro della Società, che è addirittura un discendente dall’alchimista Sylvester, e la fotografa Venetia Milton, che è stata incaricata di catalogare la collezione di antichi reperti della Società, ma che scopre improvvisamente di avere in potere di vedere le “aure” della gente. Gabriel e Venetia dovranno unire le loro forze per recuperare un antico manoscritto, rubato agli archivi della Società, che si dice contenga una formula in grado di accrescere le capacità extrasensoriali – e, naturalmente, scoprire il ladro!

Sarà interessante vedere come la Quick riuscirà a gestire allo stesso tempo elementi paranormali ed una trama suspence ( nella sua newsletter definisce il romanzo “ un thriller paranormale romantico” ). Le componenti “mistery” sembrano apparire sempre più spesso nei suoi ultimi lavori – v. ad esempio la serie dedicata a Lavinia e Thobias ( LATE FOR THE WEDDING ), ma a mio parere questi ultimi romanzi non sono avvincenti quanto i classici dell’autrice usciti negli anni 90 (DANGEROUS; RAVISHED, MISTRESS ): non che siano pesanti o noiosi, ma personalmente non mi sono affatto sembrati dei “page-turners”, cioè di quei libri le cui pagine si girano praticamente da sole tant’è l’ansia di vederne la fine… e, soprattutto, sembra che manchino dell’umorismo che è stato in passato uno dei tratti più caratteristici dell’autrice.

Vediamo se l’uso del paranormale ( che ultimamente sembra imperversare ovunque nel romance ) – riuscirà a rivitalizzare un po’ le cose ?

SECONDS SIGHT, the first novel her new series settled in the Victorian era, has just been released in the US by Berkey Jove in hardcover. Each novel of this series will have as a background the Arcane Society, the mysterious secret organisation devoted to psychic/paranormal research founded in 1600 by an alchemist, Sylvester Jones.

The main characters in are the enigmatic Gabriel Jones, who is the Society’s Master but also a direct descendant of Sylvester the alchemist, and Venetia Milton, a photographer who has been hired to catalogue the Society’s collection of ancient artefacts, but suddenly discovers to be able to see the auras of people. Gabriel and Venetia will join their forces to recover an ancient notebook, stolen from the Society’s archives, which is told to contain a formula believed to enhance psychic powers – and discover the thief, of course!

Il will be interesting to see how miss Quick will be able to handle paranormal elements together with a suspence plot ( she describes the novel in her newsletter as a “psychic romantic-thriller” ). Mistery seems more and more recurrent in her late books – see Lavinian and Thobias’ seres ( LATE FOR THE WEDDING etc ), but I found these novels somehow lacking of the enthralling quality of her old classics published in the 90s ( DANGEROUS; RAVISHED, MISTRESS) : not that I found them dull or boring, but they are not page-turners either –and worst of all they seem to lack of that sense of humour which in the past was one of AQ’s moste distinctive features.

Let’s see if paranormal - which seems to be all the rage today in romance novels – can revitalise things a bit ?
