ELOISA JAMES : ritratto di una scrittrice

When talking about her life, New York Times bestselling author Eloisa James confesses that she has three different lives! First she’s a full time mom of two children and wife of an Italian knight that is also a professor of Italian at Rutgers. Then as Mary Bly she is a Shakespearean scholar and associated professor at Fordham University, she has graduated from Harvard University, got an M.Phil. from Oxford University, a Ph.D. from Yale and she has published an academic book with Oxford University Press. Finally she’s Eloisa James, an accomplished and really amazing romance writer.

The management of this “double life” and the fact that her colleagues and the academic world weren’t aware of her is a source of fascination to the media and her readers; she “outed” shortly before the publication of Much Ado About You in 2005.

She has admitted that she started writing because she wanted a second baby, and her husband didn’t, instead he urged her to think of a way to pay her student loans. She couldn’t choose a better way to do it! Once she’s started writing she realized that she loved it, and although her first contract paid her student loan, she couldn’t imagine stopping by then

About her books she says that she writes fairly sexy, intelligent romances set in the regency period in England; that she thinks that women friendships is very important, that is why she focus not only on the relationship between the hero and heroine, but also between her and her friends and sisters; that she findsgrowth within marriage fascinating and more interesting than courtship, that is why her couples are often married or married halfway through the book; and that she loves to create a setting and web of relations that can be followed for 3-4 books, with an overarching story leading through all the books.

Having studied for more than 8 years English history she doesn’t need much historical research, but she lets the story develop in her head and then writes it down when it’s clear, shaping the characters, dialogues etc. Eloisa states that her 2 years at Oxford have helped her in her writing to gain a sense of the rhythm of speech, and she got it so well that recently she has received a letter from a retired Englishman that told her that her dialogue sounded absolutely English.

Her Shakespearian and Renaissance studies had a great influence in her writing, her books are often inspired by Shakespeare’s plays ( Much ado about you and Kiss me Annabel that is a sort of The taming of the Shrew where the shrew is the hero) or others, like Midnight Pleasure came from a play published around 1607 with a similar plot, or historical facts like Duchess in Love inspired by an episode in the life of the Earl of Essex, back in the Renaissance.

Till now ( July 2006) her books haven’t been translated in Italian, we hope that they will soon see to it!!

A little titbit to conclude. Mary chose the pseudonym Eloisa James because she thought that

Eloisa could be a lovely name for a daughter, but her husband disagreed, and by the time she was thinking about the name, her knight was reading Henry James.

Primo è una mamma a tempo pieno di due bambini e moglie di un cavaliere italiano, che è anche professore di Italiano a Rutgers. Poi, come Mary Bly è una studiosa di Shakespeare e professore assistente alla Fordham University, si è laureata ad Harvard e, ha ottenuto un master in filosofia a Oxford e un dottorato di ricerca a Yale e, ha anche pubblicato un libro universitario per la Oxford University Press. Infine è Eloisa James, una scrittrice di romance dotata e sorprendente.

La gestione di questa “doppia vita” e il fatto che i suoi colleghi e il mondo accademico non ne fossero a conoscenza, affascina sia i media che i lettori; ha fatto “outing” poco prima della pubblicazione di Much Ado About You nel 2005.

Ha ammesso di aver iniziato a scrivere perché voleva un secondo bambino, ma suo marito no, anzi, l’ha invitata a trovare un modo per pagare il prestito studentesco. Non poteva scegliere un modo migliore per farlo! Una volta iniziato a scrivere si è resa conto che farlo le piaceva molto, e, anche se il suo primo contratto ha saldato il suo prestito, a quel punto non poteva immaginare di smettere.

Dei suoi libri dice che scrive romance piuttosto sensuali e intelligenti, ambientati nel periodo regency in Inghilterra; che pensa che l’amicizia tra donne sia molto importante e per questo non si concentra solo sul rapporto tra l’eroe e l’eroina, ma anche tra lei e le sue amiche e sorelle; trova affascinate e, più interessante del corteggiamento, la crescita all’interno del matrimonio, questo è il motivo per cui le sue coppie spesso sono sposate o si sposano nel corso del libro; infine ama creare un ambientazione e una trama di relazioni che si dipanano per 3- 4 libri, con una storia principale che si estende e sviluppa per tutti i libri.

Dato che ha studiato la storia inglese per più di otto anni, non ha bisogno di molte ricerche storiche, ma lascia che la storia si sviluppi nella sua testa, per poi “buttarla giù” quando ha preso corpo e si è chiarita, dando forma ai personaggi, ai dialoghi etc. Eloisa afferma che i 2 anni passati a Oxford l’hanno aiutata ad acquisire un buon senso del ritmo del discorso, e, c’è riuscita talmente bene che recentemente ha ricevuto una lettera da un pensionato inglese che si complimentava perché i suoi dialoghi sembravano assolutamente inglesi.

I suoi studi su Shakespeare e sul Rinascimento hanno avuto una grande influenza sulla sua scrittura, i suoi libri si ispirano spesso alle commedie shakesperiane ( Much Ado About You e Kiss Me, Annabel che è una specie di Bisbetica Domata, dove la bisbetica è però l’eroe) o di altri autori, ad esempio Midnight Pleasure è sulla scia di una commedia pubblicata intorno al 1607 con un trama simile, ma anche a fatti storici, come nel caso di Duchess in Love che prende spunto da un episodio nella vita del conte di Essex, nel periodo rinascimentale.

Ad oggi ( Luglio 2007) i suoi libri non sono ancora stati tradotti in italiano, speriamo che qualcuno se ne occupi presto!

Una piccola curiosità, per concludere. Mary ha scelto lo pseudonimo Eloisa James perché trovava Eloisa un bel nome per una figlia, ma suo marito non era d’accordo, e, mentre pensava al nome, il suo cavaliere stava leggendo Henry James.
