Colleen Gleason lives in the Midwest with her three sons, her husband and three dogs. She started writing when she was a child in elementary school and since then she had never stopped. She is an international best selling author thanks to her books about the Gardella’s Chronicles, but under the name of Joss Ware she also wrote a post-apocalyptic paranormal romance series ( in Italy published by Newton and Compton) and under the name of Colette Gale she wrote erotic tales  drawing her inspiration from some of the most famous novels such as The phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux and the the Duke of Montecristo by Dumas. Her passion for vampires starts watching Buffy The Vampire Slayer ‘s DVD’s, which inspired Victoria Gardella, the principal character of the Gardella’s Chronicles. After working in marketing and business start ups, her life long dream cames true and now she’s able to write full time.

1-Welcome Colleen! It is a great pleasure having you as our guest in concurrency with The Voss Vampire’s arrival in Italy.Would you like to begin this interview by telling us something that we wouldn’t otherwise find in your official Bio page?

 
One of the things you wouldn’t find on my official bio page is that I’m really not a big reader of vampire novels. In fact, until now, I’ve never even read Dracula! However, I’ve just begun to read the novel (as background for a future project which I’ll tell you about later) and I’m completely enamored with the book, particularly because of the way it has continued to influence the vampire genre even today, and partly because it’s really one of the best books I’ve read!
 
1-Benvenuta Colleen, è davvero un grandissimo piacere averti ospite nel nostro blog in occasione dell'uscita di The Voss Vampire in Italia.Hai voglia di cominciare questa intervista raccontandoci qualcosa di te che non si trova nelle biografie ufficiali?
 
Una delle cose che non troverete nella mia biografia ufficiale è che non sono una gran lettrice di romanzi sui vampiri. Infatti fino ad ora non ho mai letto Dracula! Comunque ho appena cominciato a leggerlo ( come background per un futuro progetto di cui vi parlerò più avanti) e sono totalmente innamorata di questo libro, in modo particolare perchè ancora oggi continua ad influenzare il genere vampiresco e in parte perchè è uno dei migliori libri che abbia mai letto.
 

2-As an author of The Gardella Chronicles you are already well known and appreciated by Italian readers. Furthermore, you are an author of another series published in our country, which you signed as Joss Ware. Could you give us a short insight into these two series?

The Gardella Vampire Chronicles is a series of five books about Victoria Gardella, who lives in London in 1820, and learns that she’s one in a long family line of vampire hunters (or Venators). The books follow her adventures as she attempts to balance the two parts of her life (the public one imposed upon her by the rigid Society in which she lives, and the private one that gives her freedom and strength, but exposes her to danger, darkness and evil).Along the way, Victoria acquires friends, allies, and lovers and I’m told by readers that one of the most exciting and compelling aspects of the series is the love triangle with Victoria, Sebastian, and Max. (Readers tend to pick a “team” and defend it voraciously. By the fifth book, however, the triangle is resolved.)As for the books I’ve written as Joss Ware…that series is so different from the Gardellas (and the Regency Draculia) that we chose to publish them under a pseudonym. The series, in the US called The Envy Chronicles, but in Italy I believe they are calling them I Diari delle Tenebre. These books are a little like the TV show LOST, along with Will Smith’s I Am Legend, with a little paranormal (like Heroes) mixed in.
The series is set fifty years after major catastrophic events have destroyed most of the earth and much of the human race. The world left behind is green and lush, almost like an urban jungle, and into this world come five men who have somehow traveled through time from our day to this post-apocalyptic setting. Each book features one of the five men learning to find his way in this new world—and the woman who loves him. The books are gritty and sexy and fast-paced, and not at all as depressing as one might think of a post-apocalyptic novel. People who enjoy the world in The Hunger Games will appreciate this dystopian series written for adults.


2-In Italia sei molto apprezzata in quanto autrice delle Gardella Chronicle, mentre da poco è stata pubblicata da noi anche la tua serie scritta con lo pseudonimo di Joss Ware, vorresti illustrarci brevemente queste due serie?

 Le cronache dei Gardella è una serie di cinque libri incentrati sulla vita di Victoria Gardella che vive nella Londra del 1820 e scopre di discendere da una lunga tradizione di cacciatori di vampiri ( Venatori). I libri illustrano le sue avventure durante il suo barcamenarsi fra una doppia vita ( quella pubblica, imposta dalle rigide regole della Società nella quale Vittoria vive, e quella privata che le concede libertà e forza, ma la espone al pericolo, all'oscurità e al maligno). Lungo la strada Victoria si fa degli amici, degli alleati e avrà degli amanti, e mi è stato detto dalle lettrici che uno degli aspetti più eccitanti e irresistibili della serie è il triangolo amoroso tra Victoria, Max e Sebastian. I lettori tendono a scegliere una coppia e a difenderla con forza. Al quinto libro comunque il triangolo è risolto. Per quanto riguarda i libri che ho scritto come Joss Ware...la serie è così differente da quella dei Gardella che abbiamo deciso di pubblicarla con uno pseudonimo. La Serie negli USA viene chiamata The Envy Chronicles, mentre in Italia credo sia stata chiamata I Diari delle Tenebre. Questi libri si rifanno un po' allo show TV LOST, insieme a Io sono Leggenda di Will Smith con un pizzico di paranormale ( tipo Heroes). La serie è ambientata cinquant'anni dopo degli eventi catastrofici che hanno distrutto la maggior parte della Terra e della razza umana. Il mondo rimasto è verde e rigoglioso, quasi come una giungla urbana, ed è in questo contesto che arrivano cinque uomini che in qualche modo hanno viaggiato nel tempo dai giorni nostri fino a questa ambientazione apocalittica. Ogni libro ha come protagonista ciascuno di questi cinque uomini che imparano in questa nuova realtà a trovare la loro strada e la donna che li ama. Le storie sono grintose, sexy, dal ritmo vivace e non così depressive come uno potrebbe pensare leggendo un romanzo post apocalittico. Coloro che amano il mondo di The Hunger Games, apprezzeranno questa serie distopica scritta per adulti.

 
3-In these recent years we have witnessed a “vampire revolution” hitting the editorial desks. As a result we have bookshops filled with a vast choice of books for those who would like to know more about these creatures’s world.
 
What do you think about this “vampire phenomena”?

 
I think the vampire phenomenon is a trend that will never leave us; and, in fact, since the fascination with the Undead has been around since before Dracula, I also don’t think it’s a new phenomenon. Yes, with Buffy and Laurell K Hamilton hitting the pop culture radar in the ‘90s, we saw the influx of more vampire and paranormal elements, but they’ve always been there. Just…underground. J
 
Do you feel the weight of this tendency when you start writing a new book, or you do not let yourself get influenced?
 
One of the reasons that I don’t read vampire novels as a rule is because I don’t want to be influenced by them at all. I like to write living in a little bit of a vacuum, and it’s served me well, I think. I have read a few books, to get a sense for the various worlds and mythologies, but I try to avoid them for that reason.

3-In questi ultimi anni l'editoria ha subito una rivoluzione in tema di vampiri e sugli scaffali delle  librerie c'e' solo l'imbarazzo della scelta per chi vuole fare la conoscenza di queste creature.  Cosa pensi di questo fenomeno che vede i vampiri maggiormente protagonisti fra le pagine dei libri?  Tu ne avverti il peso quando scrivi o non ti lasci influenzare?
 
Io penso che il fenomeno dei vampiri è un trend che non ci lascerà mai, e proprio perché il fascino per i Nonmorti circola da prima di Dracula, non sono convinta che si tratti di un fenomeno poi così nuovo. Certo, con Buffy e Laurell K. Hamilton che hanno investito la cultura pop degli anni 90, abbiamo assistito ad un influsso maggiore di vampiri ed elementi paranormali, ma sono sempre stati lì, solo sepolti. Una delle ragioni per cui mi sono imposta la regola di non leggere romanzi di vampiri è proprio perché non voglio esserne influenzata. Mi piace scrivere come in una sorta di vuoto, e mi è molto utile credo. Ho letto qualche libro, per farmi un'idea dei mondi e delle mitologie, ma tendo ad evitarli per le ragioni di cui sopra
 
4- How do you create your vampires?
What are the elements that must not be missing in any of your stories?
 
 Since I’ve had to create two different “worlds” in which my vampires live—even though both the Gardellas and the Draculia take place in the early 19th century London/Paris/Venice/Rome—I had to give much thought to my vampires, and to also make them different between the series.
 

I start with the “how”—how they became a vampire, and what it means to be a vampire in my Gardella or Draculia world. (It means different things in each series.) And then I think about what the implications are for that “how”—how it affects their lives, their mortality, their souls, etc. And then I begin to build the world around them
 .

Because the basis for both of my vampire worlds does come from the common vampire mythos exhibited in Dracula, I start with the kernel that my vampires are related to evil and darkness. Can they be redeemed? Do they want to be redeemed? That becomes part of the problem that must be resolved in the particular book I’m working on.
 

I strive to have a lot of action and suspense in my stories, as well as the development of a relationship between a man and a woman.
 
My female characters are always strong, and it’s important to me that their romantic partner accepts that strength and allows the woman to be who she is. That is the kernel, the theme, of each of my stories, regardless of the setting.

 
4-I tuoi vampiri in particolare come nascono? Quali sono gli elementi che assolutamente non mancano nelle tue storie?
 
Siccome ho creato due mondi differenti nei quali i miei vampiri vivono -.anche se entrambe le serie Gardella e Draculia sono ambientate agli inizi del 19mo secolo fra Londra, Parigi, Venezia, Roma - ho dovuto pensare maggiormente ai miei vampiri, e renderli diversi all’interno delle due serie. Comincio con il "come" - come diventano vampiri e cosa voglia dire essere vampiri nel mondo dei Gardella e dei Draculia ( hanno significati differenti in ciascuna serie). E poi penso alle implicazioni che derivano dal " come", come influenza le loro vite, la loro mortalità, le loro anime etc. In seguito i comincio a creare il mondo attorno a loro.
Poiché le fondamenta di entrambi i mondi dei miei vampiri sono costruite sui miti diffusi presenti in Dracula, parto inizialmente dal nocciolo che vede i miei vampiri legati al diabolico e all’oscurità. Possono redimersi? Vogliono essere redenti? Questo diventa parte del problema che deve essere risolto nel libro a cui sto lavorando. Mi sforzo di infondere azione e suspense nelle mie storie e anche lo sviluppo di un rapporto tra uomo e donna. Le protagoniste femminili sono sempre forti, ed è importante per me che il loro partner accetti la loro forza e  permetta alla donna di essere  ciò che è. Questo è il cuore, il tema di ciascuna mia storia, indipendentemente dall'ambientazione
 
 
5- In your opinion, what are the characteristics that make a vampire so fascinating in woman’s eyes?
 
 There are several…one of which is the whole enticing idea of a man (sexy, of course) slipping into your room at night, unbidden, and luring you into some sensual experience. The idea of penetration by fangs in the very erogenous zone of the neck and throat is also sexy and dangerous and thrilling.
 In many vampire novels and stories, the vampire is so obsessed with the woman that he literally cannot exist without having her…and I think many women find that sort of “need” very compellin
 
5-Secondo te quali sono le caratteristiche in un vampiro che affascinano tanto le lettrici?
 
Sono diverse...una di queste è proprio l'idea seducente dell'uomo ( sexy , certamente) che spontaneamente scivola nella tua camera di notte e ti attira in una qualche esperienza sensuale. L'idea delle zanne che penetrano in una zona erogena come quella del collo e della gola è in ugual modo sexy, pericolosa ed eccitante. In molti romanzi e storie del genere, i vampiri sono così ossessionati dalla donna che letteralmente non possono esistere senza averla....io credo che molte donne trovino questa sorta di " bisogno" decisamente irresistibile..
 
6- In a short while, The Voss Vampire, the first book in your Draculia Regency Series, is going to be published in Italy, and we are very curious to know more about this work in particular. Would you like to tell us something more about it?

Yes! The Vampire Voss is very much a vampire romance, unlike the Gardella books. The main character, Voss, is indeed a vampire who lives in Regency-era London (the time of Jane Austen, of the Napoleonic Wars) and has a whole underground world in which he participates. He’s a rake and a charmer and loves women, loves sensuality, loves to manipulate and play games…he’s very hedonistic. How else would a very rich, very powerful, very sexy man who shall live forever act? He lives for pleasure and pleasure alone.But when he meets Angelica Woodmore, something changes. She has a special power of her own, and he wants to use that power in his political games. For the first time, he learns that he can’t enthrall a woman. She’s different. And therein begins their story.
 The vampires in the Regency Draculia books are not purely evil as they are in the Gardellas. In fact, just as there are in the mortal world, there is a whole spectrum of good versus bad vampires. Some of them live their lives raping and pillaging and taking from the mortals, and others merely try to live alongside them—taking their pleasure, but not so destructively.
 Each vampire has agreed to sell his soul to Lucifer, a covenant which happens during a dream that he/she isn’t certain is real until they awaken and find their lives changed. And each vampire has an Asthenia, a weakness (like an Achilles’ Heel), that plagues them through their lives. An Asthenia might be something as common as silver or basil, or as uncommon as absinthe or diamonds. The Asthenia often plays a large role in the story.
 

6-A breve The Voss Vampire, primo libro della serie Draculia Regency,uscirà in Italia e noi siamo curiose di conoscere questa tuo nuovo lavoro. Ce ne vuoi parlare?

 
Si! The Voss Vampire ( Patto col diavolo in italiano) è un romance vampiresco, diversamente dai libri dei Gardella. Il protagonista principale, Voss, è infatti un vampiro che vive nella Londra dell'era Regency ( il tempo di Jane Austen, delle Guerre Napoleoniche) e si muove in un proprio mondo clandestino. E' un libertino e un incantatore che ama le donne, ama la sensualità e adora manipolare la gente e fare i giochetti... è molto edonistico. E come potrebbe muoversi diversamente un uomo molto ricco, molto potente, molto sexy, destinato a vivere in eterno ? Vive per il piacere e solo per quello. Ma quando incontra Angelica Woodmore, qualcosa cambia. La donna possiede un potere speciale, e lui vuole sfruttarlo per i suoi giochi politici. Per la prima volta impara che non può ammaliare una donna. Lei è differente e da qui comincia la sua storia... I vampiri della serie Regency Draculia non sono puramente cattivi come in quella dei Gardella. Infatti come avviene per gli esseri umani , anche per i vampiri esiste uno spettro che va contemplando sia quelli buoni che quelli cattivi. Alcuni di loro vivono violando e sfruttando i mortali, altri convivono con essi, prendendo si il loro piacere, ma non in modo distruttivo. Ogni vampiro ha accettato di vendere la sua anima a Lucifero, un patto che avviene durante un sogno di cui la vittima non coglie la realtà fino a quando non si sveglia e si accorge che la vita è cambiata. E ciascun vampiro ha un Asthenia, una debolezza ( una sorta di Tallone d'Achille) che lo tormenta tutta la vita. Un'Asthenia può essere rappresentata da qualcosa di comune come l'argento o il basilico o da qualcosa di un po' meno comune come assenzio o i diamanti. L'Asthenia gioca un ruolo molto importante nella storia.
 
7- Do you allow yourself to be influenced by the reviews?
 
No. I try not to read them. If my editor, agent, or a friend sends me one, I know it’s one I’ll enjoy, and so I’ll read it. But other than that, I don’t read reviews. It can be paralyzing.
 
What kind of emotions do you go through before one of your books release?
 
It’s all excitement and thrills and also nervousness. Will people like it?  

 
7 -Ti lasci condizionare dalle recensioni?
 
No, cerco di non leggerle. Se il mio editore o l'agente ne manda una, so che mi piacerà e quindi la leggo. Ma a parte questo caso, non leggo le recensioni, può essere paralizzante.
 
Come vivi l'uscita di un tuo nuovo libro?
E' tutto eccitazione, brividi e nervosismo. Piacerà ai lettori?
 
8- You’ve written an erotica version of The Phantom of the Opera, under the pen name Colette Gale. How did you get the idea to write this story?
 
I’m a huge fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera and I was always very angry with the way it ended—Christine leaving the Phantom and going off with Raoul. And even though I watched it over and over, and even saw the movie, the ending never changed! And so I decided to write my own version that told what happened during “The Music of the Night” down in the Phantom’s lair…and in which Christine does stay with the Phantom.
 
8-Hai scritto anche un romanzo con lo pseudonimo di Colette Gale, una rivisitazione in chiave erotica del Fantasma dell'Opera. Come è nata l'idea  questo libro?
 
Sono una grandissima fan del Fantasma dell'Opera di Andrew Lloyd Webber, mi sono sempre arrabbiata per come finisce- Christine che abbandona il Fantasma e va con Raoul. Anche se l’ho guardato e riguardato , e ho anche visto il film, il finale non è mai cambiato. Così ho deciso di scrivere la mia versione che racconta cosa succede nel nascondiglio del Fantasma durante" la musica della notte" e nella quale Christine rimane con il fantasma..
 
 

9- Most of the authors, when asked if they have a favourite hero among those that came from their own pen, the usual answer is that there isn’t a favourite one, that they all have a special place in their author’s heart. Is it the same for you, or there is one of your heroes that is somehow special?
 
 I have a favorite hero, but I never tell who it is. J However, many, many of my readers have told me he is their favorite hero too.
 
9-La maggiorparte delle autrici alle quali chiediamo se fra i loro personaggi ce n'è uno particolarmente caro, ci rispondono di no, ciascun protagonista ha il suo posto nel loro cuore di autrice. E' così anche per te oppure c'e' un personaggio che ha lasciato il segno più di altri?

Io ho un eroe preferito ma non svelerò mai chi è. Comunque molte, molte delle mie lettrici mi hanno detto che è anche il loro eroe preferito.
 
10- What are your favourite reads in your free time? Are there any authors that you are particularly fond of? How much of what you read has an influence on what you write?
 
As I mentioned above, I don’t generally read vampire or paranormal novels. I like to read mysteries, historical romance, or some contemporary romances—so on my bookshelf are books by Robyn Carr, Nora Roberts, J. D. Robb, Barbara Michaels, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Julia Quinn, and others.
 
 
10-Cosa ti piace leggere nel tempo libero? Ci sono autori/autrici che ami particolarmente?Quanto delle tue letture personali ha influenzato la tua scrittura e le tue storie?
 
Come ho detto sopra, generalmente non leggo i libri di vampiri o romanzi paranormali. Mi piace leggere romance gialli e storici, o qualche contemporaneo, così nella mia libreria ci sono libri di Robyn Carr, Nora Roberts , J. D. Robb, Barbara Micheals, Susan Elizabeth Philips, Julia Quinn e altre.
 
 
11- Can you tell us if there are any new works in progress and if there are any new projects in sight?

Yes, indeed! I’m very excited that I’ve recently agreed to a contract for a series of Young Adult books set in an alternate Victorian world—a steampunk world. The first book won’t be out in the US until 2013, but I am already working on it now.
There will be more information forthcoming when I can share more details. But I did mention above that I am reading Dracula as preparation/research for the new project…
 

11-Puoi svelarci a cosa stai lavorando attualmente e quali sono i tuoi progetti per il futuro?
 
Si appunto! Sono molto emozionata per il fatto che ho recentemente firmato un contratto per una serie Young Adult ambientata in un'era vittoriana alternativa- un mondo steampunk. Il primo libro uscirà negli USA non prima del 2013, ma ci sto già lavorando adesso. Ci saranno maggiori  informazioni disponibili più avanti, quando posso condividere più dettagli. Ma ho già scritto sopra che sto leggendo Dracula proprio in preparazione a  questo nuovo progetto.

12- You have been recently to Italy to present your books; can you share with us your most unforgettable moments from this trip? What kind of impression your Italian fans have left on you and what is your relation with them?
 

 My most unforgettable moment was walking into the room where all of my fans were waiting for me to speak to them. It was beautiful and amazing to see so many people there to see me, so many fans who love the Gardella books. It was a wonderful experience to be in a room with people who wanted to talk about them!
I think my Italian fans are the sweetest and most loyal fans, and they brought me gifts and compliments and hugs, and I would love to come back to Italy again! I didn’t get to see as much of the country as I wanted (only Venice and Ravenna) and I love to eat and I love history and so there are so many things I missed. However, I had a most wonderful time in Ravenna, meeting everyone who came to the festival. And a wonderful fan came to a dinner in Forlí that I attended, and she brought lovely gifts and many questions from this website. I was so honored to meet her and all of the other readers that came to see me at the various events in Italy.

 

12-Sei stata recentemente in Italia per parlare dei tuoi libri; quali sono i ricordi più belli di questo viaggio?
come hai trovato le tue fan italiane e che rapporto hai con loro?
 
Uno dei momenti più indimenticabili è stato camminare nella sala dove tutte le mie fans erano lì ad aspettarmi per parlare con loro. E' stato bellissimo ed emozionante vedere quante persone erano lì per incontrarmi, così tante fans che amano i libri della serie Gardella. E' stata un'esperienza meravigliosa essere nella sala con persone che volevano parlare dei personaggi. Penso che le mie fans italiane siano le più dolci e anche le più affezionate,mi hanno anche portato doni, mi hanno fatto complimenti e abbracciato, e mi piacerebbe tornare in Italia ancora una volta. Non sono riuscita a vedere tutto quello che volevo del vostro paese ( solo Venezia e Ravenna) e io ne amo il cibo , la storia e molte cose mi sono sfuggite .Comunque ho trascorso ore meravigliose a Ravenna, incontrando tutti quelli che erano venuti per il Festival. Una fan deliziosa è venuta a Forlì, dove avevo in programma una cena con tutte le lettrici e mi ha portato dei doni squisiti. E’ stato un onore incontrare lei e tutte le altre lettrici che sono venute per vedermi durante gli incontri programmati in Italia.
 
13- Is there anything else you would like to tell to your Italian readers?
 
Yes, first I would like to thank all of them for their amazing support and affection. Kisses to all of you!
 
And I would like to say that even though I don’t speak Italian, I love to get emails from them and I can usually get them translated and make some sort of response—so please, write to me if you like or if you have questions! I will try to respond as soon as I can.
