Anne loves Japanese Rock and Roll, her two kids, telling stories, her husband, her three cats and living in Vermont ( not necessarily in this order) She's not too crazy about politcs and diets and a winter that never ends, but then, life is always a trade off. She has written gothics, regencies, romantic suspense, historical romance, anything with sex and violence, love and redemption. She won several prizes such as Lifetime Achievement Award from the Romance Writers of America  and three Rita awards. When she doesn't write she likes quilt and playing around with wereable art.

1-We are delighted and honoured by your acceptance to give an interview for our blog on the occasion of the approaching release date of the Italian edition of your book “Ruthless”.It is known that you are a woman of many interests and passions. Would you feel like to begin this interview by telling us something about yourself that we don’t usually find in the official biographies?

I used to play the guitar, write songs and sing. Sort of folk-country, like Emmy Lou Harris, and I wasn't bad. But it needed such passion and involvement, and I couldn't do that and throw my heart into writing.
 

1- Siamo felici e onorate che tu abbia accettato di farti intervistare in occasione dell'uscita dell'edizione italiana di Ruthless. Sappiamo che sei una donna dai tanti interessi e passioni, hai voglia di cominciare raccontandoci qualcosa a di te che non si trova nelle biografie ufficiali?

Un tempo suonavo la chitarra, scrivevo canzoni e cantavo. Una sorta di folk country, sullo stile  Emmy Lou Harris e non ero male. Ma la musica richiedeva una tale passione e un tale coinvolgimento che io non me la sono sentita di continuare, dedicandomi allo stesso tempo anima e corpo alla scrittura.
 

2- The series that you’ve written until now are very few, comparing to the large number of single novels you’ve published since the beginning of your writing career (the series about the Rohan family is only the second one after the ICE series). What kept you away from writing more romance series?

I didn't enjoy reading romances in a series -- if I read something out of order, which was likely to happen, it always felt as if I was at a party where everyone knew everyone else and I was the only stranger. I also felt that once I wrote about characters I was done with them, and didn't want to revisit. However, when I finished the first ICE book I found I couldn't stay away from that world, and I finally gave in. Now I really love writing series -- I want to create a rich world with a dozen stories within it.

2-Sono davvero poche le serie che hai scritto rispetto ai tanti libri che hai pubblicato nel corso della tua carriera ( la serie della famiglia Rohan è solo la seconda dopo quella ICE). Cosa ti ha frenato dallo scrivere serie romance?

Non mi piaceva leggere i romanzi strutturati in una serie, se leggevo qualcosa in ordine sparso, cosa che era molto probabile, avevo sempre come la sensazione di trovarmi ad una festa dove tutti conoscevano tutti e io ero l'unica estranea. Ho sempre avvertito la sensazione che una volta raccontata la storia dei miei personaggi  con loro avevo chiuso il discorso e non avevo più voglia di tornare a rivederli. Comunque, quando ho finito il primo libro di quella che è adesso la serie ICE; mi sono resa conto che non potevo stare lontana da quei personaggi  e ho ceduto . Adesso mi piace davvero scrivere le serie,  voglio creare un mondo ricco che contenga  dozzine di storie.

3-What made you go back to the historical romance genre? Do you feel more at home writing contemporaries or historicals?

 I feel at home writing both. I used to alternate, and I tend to like it that way. I love the richness of a historical world, the romp aspect of them, and I love the intensity and violence and sex of the modern world. And don't get me started on paranormal. I've always had too many stories that I want to write.

3-Che cosa ti ha spinto a tornare al genere storico? Ti trovi più a tuo agio a scrivere romance contemporanei o storici?

Mi trovo a mio agio con entrambi, ma sono solita alternare, e direi che mi piace fare così. Mi piace la ricchezza del mondo storico, la sua capacità di offrire puro intrattenimento e adoro l'intensità, la violenza e il sesso del mondo moderno. E non parliamo del paranormale. Ho sempre avuto fin troppe storie da raccontare.

4-Would you like to present to our readers the members of the Rohan family, seen that soon they will have the chance to read about them in Italy too?

I've written about four generations. I wrote a prequel that's available as an e-read called the WICKED HOUSE OF ROHAN, about Alistair Rohan, a decadent nobleman in Venice in the 1740s. Alistair's cousin is Viscount Rohan. He dies at Culloden, leaving his son, Francis, as heir and only surviving member of the family. Francis is the hero of RUTHLESS. Francis's son, Adrian, is the hero of RECKLESS. Adrian's daughter, Miranda, is the heroine of BREATHLESS. And Adrian's oldest son, Miranda's brother Benedick, is the hero of SHAMELESS.
 

4-Ti andrebbe di presentare alle nostre lettrici i membri della famiglia Rohan, visto che a breve leggeranno l'edizione italian dei libri?

Ho raccontato al storia di quattro generazioni. Ho scritto un prequel che è disponibile come e-book e che si intitola Wicked House of Rohan, narra di Alistair Rohan, un  decadente nobile che vive a Venezia nel 1740. Il cugino di Alistair  è il Visconte Rohan che muore a Culloden lasciando suo figlio Francis quale erede e unico membro sopravissuto della famiglia. Francis è l'eroe di Ruthleess ( INNOCENZA E SEDUZIONE), il figlio di Francis, Adrian è l'eroe di Reckless e la figlia di Adrian, Miranda è l'eroina di Breathless. Il figlio maggiore di Adrian, fratello di Miranda, Benedick, è l'eroe di Shameless.

5- What were your sources of inspiration that helped you in creating the secret society Heavenly Host and its motto Do what you wilt?

I based them on the Hellfire Club, a group of decadent but basically harmless aristocrats in England in the 18th century (Benjamin Franklin was even supposed to be a member). Their motto was "Do What Thou Wilt", based on the motto of the fictional Abbey of Theleme by Rabelais.

5- Quali sono state le tue fonti di ispirazioni per la creazione della società Heavenly Host e il suo motto: " fai cià che vuoi"?

Mi sono basata sull' Hellfire Club, un gruppo di decadenti ma essenzialmente innocui aristocratici dell'Inghilterra del diciottesimo secolo ( si pensa che anche Benjamin Franklin ne facesse parte). Il loro motto era " fai ciò che vuoi" che si rifaceva al motto della fittizia Abbazia di Theleme di Rabelais.

6- the prequel novel to the Rohan series was set in Venice, while “The Widow”, was set in Tuscany. Have you ever visited our country?

I've only been to Venice, which I adore, and I'd love to spend time in Tuscany and in some of the mountainous regions. I love Italy!

6- Il prequel della serie Rohan è ambientato a Venezia e the Widow in Toscana, sei mai stata nel nostro paese?

Sono stata solamente a Venezia che adoro e mi piacerebbe  trascorrere un po' di  tempo in Toscana e in montagna, da qualche parte. Adoro l'Italia.
 

7-While you were writing the Rohan series, were you listening to some particular music that served as inspiration?

Oh, I had a whole soundtrack for each book, including a bunch of dance music I found on iTunes. I had some Andrea Bocelli, a bunch of Scottish rebellion music, a fair amount of Puccini (wrong time period but the right emotional feel). Richard Thompson, some Sarah MacLachlan, some Crowded House and Fleetwood Mac. I'm very broadminded when it comes to music.

7- C'e' una particolare colonna sonora che ha accompagnato la stesura dei libri della serie Rohan?

oh, ho una colonna sonora intera per ciascun libro, incluse anche un gruppo di canzoni di dance  music che ho trovato su iTunes. Ho ascoltato un po' di Andrea Bocelli, un gruppo di canzoni di musica della ribellione scozzese una discreta quantità di Puccini ( il periodo storico è sbagliato, ma le emozioni suscitate sono quelle giuste). Richard Thompson, Sarah MacLachlAn, un po' di Crowded House e Fleetwood Mac, Sono molto di larghe vedute quando si tratta di musica.

8- How do you feel before one of your books' release? Do you allow yourself to be influenced by the reviews?

 Depends on the book. Sometimes I get nervous, sometimes I'm full of despair, assuming the worst. As for reviews, it depends on my mood. In general if someone hates a book I adore then I just figure they're misguided. No review could convince me that a book I love is less than wonderful.
 

8- Come vivi periodo che precede l'uscita di un  tuo libro? Ti fai condizionare dalle recensioni?

Dipende dal libro. Qualche volta sono nervosa, qualche volta in preda alla disperazione, e penso  al peggio. Per quanto riguarda le recensioni dipende dal mio stato d'animo. In genere se qualcuno detesta un libro che io ho adorato, immagino che sia stato consigliato male. Non esiste recensione che possa convincermi che il libro che amo sia meno che meraviglioso.

9- Do you agree on what we read in Amazon's reviews regarding your books; " Anne Stuart is not for everybody"? We agree on the fact that your stories break off with romance traditions both for your characters and your plots that stand out for dark and unsettling atmospheres, such as Nightfall.
What do you think about it?
 

Well, in fact, no book is for everyone, not even Harry Potter. I don't really think my stuff is that difficult or suits that narrow an audience. But since people say that over and over again, perhaps they're right.

9-Sei d'accordo con quello che spesso si legge nelle recensioni di Amazon a proposito dei tuoi libri: "Anne Stuart non è per tutte"?. Noi concordiamo sul fatto che sia per i personaggi che
per le trame che riesci a creare, i tuoi libri si discostino dai canoni classici dei romance, presentando spesso tinte molto estreme come in Nightfall ( BUIO). Cosa pensi al riguardo?

Be', in effetti nessun libro è per tutti, nemmeno Harry Potter. Non penso veramente che quel che scrivo  sia così difficile o dedicata ad un pubblico ristretto.  Ma poichè la gente continua a ripeterlo in continuazione, forse hanno ragione.

10- During your first interview on our blog, you told us that you had to make changes in "To love a dark lord" following your editor's directions. Did it ever occurred to you again to have to lighten your books up?

Not if the book is called upon to be dark. Then again, I didn't think the Rohans were that dark, but readers have disagreed, so what do I know? I've written lighter, funnier books, but I tend to like strong emotions and action, and those don't tend to mix too well with romps.

10- In passato ci hai detto che avevi dovuto apportare delle modifiche a "To love a dark lord" su indicazione del tuo editor.
Ti è successo altre volte di dover "alleggerire" trame o personaggi dei suoi romanzi?

No se il libro è destinato a essere dark. Come dicevo prima, non penso che i Rohan siano così dark, ma le lettrici non sono d'accordo, quindi io che ne so? Ho scritto libri  più leggeri  e divertenti, ma tendo a preferire emozioni forti e azione, e questi elementi non si mescolano bene con i libri di intrattenimento.

11- Your male characters ( such as Bastien in Black Ice, Francis and Lucien of Rohan Series) don't look like knights with shining armours when they’re going to save and protect the heroines, and if the situation calls
for it, they have to make difficult choices which break off with acknowledged romance schemes . How are so dark and original heroes born?

Out of my twisted imagination. I like a hero who's hit rock bottom, who has nothing to lose. It makes him so much more interesting when he's that bleak.

11- I protagonisti maschili dei tuoi romanzi (come Bastien ne L'interprete,  Francis in Innocenza e Seduzione  e Lucien nel terzo libro della serie Rohan, Breathless)
non si presentano come dei cavalieri in scintillante armatura sempre pronti a proteggere e salvare l'eroina, e se la situazione lo richiede, arrivano anche a fare scelte difficili che vanno spesso fuori dagli schemi universalmente riconosciuti dal romance. Da dove nascono personaggi così inediti e unici?

Dalla mia immaginazione contorta. Mi piace l'eroe che ha toccato il fondo, che non ha più nulla da perdere. E' molto più affascinante quando appare così desolato.
 

12- Are you willing to write other stand alone contemporary novels such as Nightfall, Still lake or Shadows at Sunset?

Oh, I'm sure I will. Right now my creativity is going in the direction of series, but I'm bound to come up with a powerhouse standalone book eventually.
 

12- Hai in previsione di scrivere altri contemporanei autoconclusivi sul genere di Buio, Ombre sul lago  o Il sole a Mezzanotte?

Oh certo che lo farò, in questo momento la mia creatività si muove in direzione delle serie, ma alla fine prima o poi tirerò fuori un vero battaglione di romanzi stand alone
 

13 -Beyond that vampires have become fashionable, have you ever thought to write a book about these creatures that are a big success in the bookshops?

I love vampires and always have. The very first book I set in Venice, THE DEMON COUNT, was about a man who pretended to be a vampire. I kept asking to write vampires and they kept telling me no, so finally wrote one with angels AND vampires under a different name.

13- Al di là del fatto che i vampiri rappresentino la moda del momento, hai mai pensato di scrivere un romanzo su queste creature che stanno spopolando in libreria?
 

Amo i vampiri e li ho sempre amati. Il primo libro che ho  ambientato a Venezia, The Demon Count (inedito in Italia), racconta la storia di un uomo che fa finta di essere un vampiro. Ho continuato a chiedere di poter scrivere di  vampiri  e hanno continuato a rispondermi di no, così alla fine ho scritto un libro sugli angeli e i vampiri sotto pseudonimo
 

14 Anything else you would like to tell to your Italian readers?

Just thank you so much for your support over the years. It means everything to me.
