I began reading traditional Regencies when I was seventeen. I fell in love with the time period for all the reasons you mentioned. Even then, I felt there was something missing from some of these stories. I wanted to know what was behind their smiles and civility. What happened behind closed doors? What secrets were they keeping? The eventual popularity of Regency historicals allowed me to explore the answers to these questions.
